World Rabies Day in Tanzania

Donation protected
Rabies - a devastating viral disease causing severe neural derangement. The virus causes irrational fear and results in intense aggression without immediate death. This is advantageous for the virus as it is then easily transmitted from person to person through saliva in the bites of infected animals. It has a 100% case fatality rate, but is 100% preventable.

In June 2016, we

undertook a volunteering trip to Arusha, Tanzania to work with the Meru Animal Welfare Organization to help with their activities to educate, provide solutions to welfare issues and to provide veterinary aid for the regional communities in Northern Tanzania. As a non-for-profit organization, 100% of their activities are funded by overseas animal organizations and donations from the public. So as part of World Rabies Day 2016, we aim to raise funds in order to help purchase much needed vaccines to protect the welfare of both the animals and the communities of Tanzania.

Around the world, 59,000 people die each year from rabies and 99% of those cases are transmitted from dog bites. As a result there is much fear and misguidance surrounding the treatment of dogs in regional areas and up to 10 million are culled every year often in inhumane ways in an attempt to reduce the statistic. Post-exposure prophylaxis vaccination is often very expensive and very difficult to access for rural communities so it is largely ineffective as a permanent solution in endemic areas.

However, there is a much more humane and effective method available. Spay and neuter efforts can control population numbers, and blanket vaccination is needed to help prevent transmission. A vaccination percentage of just 70% of the canine population is sufficient to prevent spread and effectively eliminate disease in that area. This has enormous impacts in preventing needless suffering and improving the quality of life for these communities.

A dontation of just $1 can allow us to vaccinate one dog against rabies and other internal parasites. We aim to be able to vaccinate as many dogs as possible to help reduce the spread of Rabies in Tanzania. Thank you for your help in improving the welfare of animals and their communities.
