On Sunday June 12, 2016, Larry was on a ladder when the feet slipped out and he crashed to the deck. He said he knew it was bad instantly as he felt his hands floating above his head yet they were not moving nor where his legs. He started having trouble breathing and seriously thought it was the "End." He said "Good-bye" to Sandy, Amy and Ben who where there in a couple seconds. Thank God he kept breathing and he was first put in an ambulance and then a few miles down the road was airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, MI.
After X-rays, MRI, CT and loads of other tests, 6 stitches to pull his lower lip back together, then strapped to a bed with zero movement and two days strapped in a torture-type rotating bed hoping swelling would subside, the doctor decided to perform surgery to remove the back sides from 3-4 vertebra to relieve spinal pressure and then screw a steel rod down both sides to stabilize the neck. The successful surgery happened at noon on Wednesday 6/15/16.
Over the next week, swelling subsided and Larry was able to get decent movement in his right leg, limited movement in right arm and hand, slight movement in left leg and none in his left arm. He was admitted into the acute rehab facility at Munson Hospital with the hope of walking again and becoming self sufficient.
As family members, we all have faith that Jesus, the Great Physician will heal him - just not sure on the timeframe. We are prepared for a long recovery period as the nerve damage was severe and the doctors can't even give a prognosis, so it is day by day and could be up to a year or more of recovery. Sandy has a room at Munson Manor next to the hospital and plans to be at the hospital every day.
We could all use plenty of prayer and encouragement. Larry and Sandy have good insurance but there are going to be many additional costs from insurance deductibles to other support and modifications to their home not covered.
