Langebaan Primary Development Fund

As some of you know I have recently moved to Cape Town to join Cape Town Research and Conservation Initiative (CTRCI), a volunteer organisation based in Langebaan. While this is a beautiful holiday town in a fantastic country rich in culture and biodiversity there are some communities who have very little and struggle to put food on the table each day.
One of our initiatives is environmental education, volunteers work with local community schools engaging kids in sustainable issues. Through this we have come to work with SACROD , a community development non-profit organisation run by a fantastic couple who do great work with Langebaan Primary School, helping to provide at least one meal a day for the 400+ students. They have also recently built a vegetable garden that needs expansion and constant maintainence. Whilst SACROD are doing excellent work with the food there is still so much more to be done at this school to bring it to the level that the kids deserve to give them a fighting chance at a better future.
The school runs on a near non-existent budget, the kids have no undercover area to protect them from the rain when not in class, some days the government funded companies don't deliver food therefore there is not enough to go around, the school has a library full of fantastic books that has been unused for 15 years as no one has the time or money to fix it up. They also have very few arts supplies limiting their creative abilities, an essential part of learning.
We will use the money we raise to purchase materials to renovate the library and next door room, giving the kids a space to develop their reading skills and relax. We will also buy arts supplies so that we can run creative classes with the kids bringing fun to afterschool clubs.
The money will also contribute towards the building of the outdoor classroom and development and maintainence of the vegetable garden. We hope to create a compost heap and plant enough seeds to see the school through the seasons!
