My name is Yousuf Reza and I have been selected to participate in the 12th annual Muslim Youth Leadership Program (MYLP) by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in August in Sacramento, California. I have just completed 10th grade at San Jose High School. This 4-day-long exclusive program is limited to forty high school students throughout California who are interested in politics, government and empowering the Muslim community. It is an honor to be selected for MYLP and I am excited about attending. I am writing to ask for your financial support to help me attend.
I am an active member in my school's Muslim Student Association. Our club has organized many events to provide our members with opportunities to volunteer and participate in their communities, such as volunteering for Habitat for Humanity on weekends. This past year, we promoted World Hijab Day at our school and had many students and faculty members participate, coming to school with a scarf around there head or neck (for boys) to show solidarity. I have volunteered several times at opportunities provided by the Muslim Community Association, such as volunteering at the Hope Services building next door, volunteering at fundraisers for Granada Islamic School, as well as various feed the poor events such as those on Abraham's day. I have a passion for playing sports and genuinely enjoy being outdoors, whether I'm just walking around with friends and family, swimming, or playing a game of basketball or tennis, as well as solving logic puzzles. Recent events have cast shade over the Muslim community and have given us a bad reputation with a vast amount of people. My sister has had first hand experience with the effects of Islamophobia, facing discrimination and even being wacked on the head on one occasion. It is more important than ever to help the Muslim community. For years I have been interested in the work CAIR has done and I now have an opportunity to experience and learn about it first hand.
At the MYLP I will be receiving workshops and seminars from leading experts in the areas of civic engagement, public policy, and media and communications, and will have an opportunity to interact with other gifted Muslim high school students from across California. The MYLP experience will enhance the leadership skills I will need to acquire the skills necessary to help empower and defend our community.
In order to participate, I have pledged to fundraise $800 so as to attend this conference.
I am calling on and depending on your suppport to help sponsor my participation in the MYLP. Your tax-deductible contribution of any amount will directly facilitate my attending this year's MYLP, and contribute to my attaining the skills I need to help make a difference for the community in the future.
