A Little Bit About Me…
My name is Karine. I am a young woman from Armenia, currently studying at the University of Cambridge. I was admitted to Cambridge having passed an extremely competitive admission, and did very well during my studies and on the exams in the end of each academic year. This proved that I can be at Cambridge and other high-quality universities in general.
Soon I shall graduate from Cambridge University and wish to continue my studies in the higher academic institutions. I have an offer from the University of Oxford, which again is a result of very difficult admission process. Now there is a possibility for my dream to be part of Oxbridge to come true. Unfortunately, the education in the UK is very expensive. During my studies I received Luys scholarship, but still it is not a full scholarship and my family has spent all its savings to support my studies at Cambridge. Now, they are no longer able to help me. I will apply to Luys Foundation for the next academic year, however, as having once received a scholarship from them, I shall be in the waiting list and will receive the scholarship only of there is still a place available.
I firmly believe that the financial difficulties should not prevent talented people from obtaining good education. Armenia does not have natural resources, so our only resource is the human one. I hope to able to gather the needed amount for my education, become a good scholar and be of help to my home country.
About My Academic Plans…
At the University of Cambridge I was doing the medieval studies of the north-western part of Europe. The course does not seem to be apparently connected to Armenia, but in fact it is. Armenia, as part an ancient Indo-European civilization had an important role in the medieval Europe. I hope to be able to help our historians, medievalists and archaeologists in their work and research in the field. At Oxford University I will do one year’s master’s course of Celtic studies, specializing particularly in Medieval Irish history, culture and literature. During my studies I have noticed a lot of striking similarities between Armenian and Irish cultures, and my main future plan is research in that area. It is not very well studied field, so I plan to be one of the first scholars to undertake this work. In fact, some Irish scholars have started to look at these similarities, thus the interest in the field gradually increases. I am on the other hand a bearer of Armenian language and culture. Having studied the Irish one thoroughly, I will be able to undertake a worthy research and it will be easier for me to do so.
Finally…
It is very difficult to find a decent job or making a career in a country like Armenia, as it has a small labor market. Thus, for a young woman without good connections, the only way to find a job and have a promotion is to obtain a high-quality education which is valued in the whole world. Despite the fact that English has never been my native language and that I have spent all my life in Armenia, I was able to achieve results which correspond to the highest standards of two of the world’s best universities. I spend the major part of my time on studying and I am devoted to my future profession and intend to achieve considerable results in it. Making a career and serving the interests of science and society is my main desire. Therefore a financial assistance will be of great help in the achievement of my goals. Today I need your help to achieve those goals, so that tomorrow I can help out my country’s development.
