How can you make a difference in the lives of refugees who are fleeing war and terror in their own communities? How can you help families, and especially the many children who are traveling alone, to relocate to a peaceful and secure situation? Here is your opportunity.
Three Athens, Ohio residents, Peggy Gish, Lisa Trocchia-Balkits, and Ivars Balkits, have been accepted as part of a summer delegation that will work with the hundreds of refugees who arrive daily by sea in small rafts to the island of Lesvos, Greece. Peggy, Lisa, and Ivars are fundraising now to establish a donation fund for refugee aid and for their travel expenses. Working under the auspices of the CPT (Christian Peacemaker Team - Mediterranean Project) , the group’s living expenses while on the island of Lesvos, Greece, will be covered. The delgates are in need of funds to cover only airfare. (The travel costs are estimated to be about $4,200.) All remaining funds raised will be donated to local relief efforts on the ground.
Peggy, Lisa, and Ivars will stay for four weeks this coming August and September. Before going to Greece, Peggy also plans to spend a month working in northern Iraq with the Christian Peacemaker Teams (mid-July to mid-August).
The goal of the CPT Mediterranean Project, which is now in its third year, is to assist local efforts that support, welcome, protect, and accompany new refugees arriving from Turkey. They also serve as witnesses, intervening to stop altercations between police and migrants, and help with the registration and translation where possible. On Lesvos, CPT Europe has been and will continue partnering with “Village of All Together” (το Χοριο του Ολοι Μαζι) , an all-volunteer group that has been helping with feeding, housing, and medical care of refugees.
Over 200,000 people crossed into Greece in just October of last year at the peak of migration. 98 percent were from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In just the last week of May 2016, over 800 individuals perished in the Mediterranean sea attempting to make the perilous journey in small rubber rafts. Those that do make it to the island of Lesvos are tramatized and need help making their way to a better life.
Any donation, however small, will enable Peggy, Lisa, and Ivars to provide human comfort, care, and hope to those in need. If enough money is raised, your donation will allow for a generous contribution to CPT's partner organization (all volunteer) for their ongoing work, day in and day out, on the island of Lesvos.
