Help Get TheGameCritique to Pax East
Hello one and all. My name is Eric Swain, more commonly known around game criticism circles as TheGameCritique. I am part of the editorial staff and master of ceremonies of the podcast at Critical-Distance. I am also a weekly columnist for PopMatters, a once and hopefully future contributor to Nightmare Mode and very occasional cub reporter for Gameranx.
PAX East is coming up very soon and I've managed to secure a press pass once again this year. I've also been lucky enough to be offered a couch to sleep on for the weekend by my best friend's sister who lives in Boston. However, even with the biggest expenses of the trip taken care of I don't have the funds for the trip itself no matter how bare-bones I make it. Most of the work I do is for free and for the last year or so I've just managed to scrape enough together to pay my monthly student loan payment. And so as a last resort I humbly come hat in hand to ask for help.
The Breakdown of Roundtrip Expenses
These are the best estimates I can figure, with potential for some parts to be cheaper and some parts more expensive.
Train from Summit to NYC - $10
Bus from NYC to Boston - $15
Subway travel for weekend - $12
Pay for half the gas on return trip to Summit - $25
Since I'm staying at his sister's house, my friend decided to take the opportunity to visit and offered me a ride back on Sunday. I figure its only fair to pay for half the gas. It's also slightly cheaper to drive, but I need to leave on Thursday earlier than he can leave work.
Food is another thing I'm willing to go without for most of the weekend, but is generally not a good idea. The rest of the amount I'm asking for would go towards feeding myself for the weekend. $8 minimum a day for 4 days is $32.
Then I rounded up the total because I feel odd enough asking for money and asking for $94 just makes it weirder. But I only need the travel expenses to actually go and meet all you fine folk at PAX East.
