Sponsorship for
Ankerr Nyinta
(Oodnadatta) Netball Team
SA Aboriginal Sports Festival 2016
SPONSORSHIP PROSPECTUS

Invitation to participate

On behalf of the working group for the 2016 Ankerr Nyinta (Oodnadatta) Netball Team I am pleased to invite you to join us and become a sponsor to ensure our team can come together and play netball in the annual 2016 SA Aboriginal Sports Festival.

2015 was our inaugural year in forming the very first Aboriginal Yankunytjatjara (which crosses NT and SA borders) netball team with players originating from or having connections to Oodnadatta.

Oodnadatta is a small town surrounded by an area of 7,800 square kilometres of cattle stations in arid pastoral rangelands close to the Simpson Desert. It is located 1011km from Adelaide (or 10 hours in a car!) and can be reached by an unsealed road from Coober Pedy, Finke or via the famous Oodnadatta track. The current population is around 277 people with a majority being Aboriginal Yankunjatjara people, all of our players have an affiliation with Oodnadatta. In 2015 our Manager Maria Stewart had a vision and that was to secure a netball team to represent Oodnadatta.

Here is a quote from our Manager (a Yankunytjatjara woman herself) when she approached sponsors in 2015.

“Growing up in remote communities I have witnessed first-hand, young women having very limited opportunities for involvement in organised sporting activities.   However, even though there are very few opportunities, when they arise, they are embraced and make such a difference to the quality of young women’s lives.  Sport is such an important part of community life and contributes greatly to improvements in health, mental and social wellbeing.

I have been approached by young Yankunytjatjara women with a passion for sports, who are interested in entering a Netball team in the 2015 Aboriginal Football and Netball Carnival in Port Augusta.  To date, there has never been a team to represent the Yankunytjatjara group.  In fact, this side would be the first netball team from remote far North SA to participate in this carnival.

This carnival is a drug and alcohol free event and we would like to promote it by actively getting involved and entering our team – ‘Ankerr Nyinta’.  Our team name describes an important dreaming story for us.”  Maria Stewart.

Below is the reality of Maria’s vision of our first Yankunjatjara netball team participating in this event in the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Festival in 2015. Maria designed the uniforms herself – they too tell a story of running up and down the netball courts with colours reflecting the desert regions these women are connected to.

Thanks to our Manager we were able to secure some sponsors in 2015 however our support was very limited and with the costs great due to the remote locations our members were based at. In 2015 our players and officials drove from Alice Springs, Whyalla, Adelaide, Ceduna and Coober Pedy to connect as kin and to play netball together in the festival.  While we didn’t win our grade we did decide that we needed a few days lead up for training as a team together in 2016 and that we would need to raise funds of approximately $26 000 to support our members to travel and be accommodation in order to participate in the next event.

Sponsors are very valued and integral to our team being able to participate again in 2016.

Your sponsorship investment will allow us to provide high quality support to our players and promote health and wellbeing to Aboriginal people, communities and our extended family members. We already have family members lining up to join grade netball clubs to get fit and then be part of our Ankerr Nyinta (Oodnadatta) Team in 2016.

Why sponsor an Aboriginal Netball Team from some of the most remote parts of South Australia?

Disadvantage comes with being Aboriginal, a woman and living in a remote location. Opportunities are extremely limited in remote areas however your sponsorship of our team will show your support of Aboriginal women from some of the most remote locations in Australia, add further to Reconciliation in Australia, promote your business and provide health outcomes and role models for the children and extended family members of this team.

This event is well attended with over 700 players in 2015 not to mention the official teams, staff on site and the 1000’s of community members and family who come to attend the festival over 2 days. The exposure of your business within the Aboriginal communities across South Australia is far reaching.

Whose included?

There will be 12 Aboriginal female players in total chosen for the 2016 competition. Players may be from Ceduna, Whyalla, Coober Pedy, Adelaide, Port Augusta, Oodnadatta and Alice Springs – all with a connection to Yankunytjatjara people. We will be participating in the B grade event with our long term goal having an A and B grade team from our area.

There will be a support team known as the ‘Team Officials’ including the Manager, Scorer, Timer, Coach and Captain. These members are meeting monthly to organise and prepare for a successful event in 2016 and will be available to the team in the lead up, during and post the 2016 SA Aboriginal Sports Festival.

Our Captain – Kylie Stewart (grew up in Oodnadatta and English is her second language). She won the Best Team Player award in 2015! Her recent love of netball has seen her 9 year old daughter join club netball. Great role model Kylie!
