Helping Grayson

Tax deductible
The Cat Shack is a non-profit, no-kill rescue located in the Lehigh Valley. In addition to an active cat and kitten placement program and a Trap/Neuter/Return program to curb cat overpopulation, the Cat Shack also provides medical care for many cats with health problems in our foster program.

The goal of this fundraiser is to help cover the medical care for life-saving vet work for a sweet cat outside of our normal projects.  The cat in need is named Grayson and he and his caretaker, Sheila, need our help.   Even with a generous discount by our veterinarian, Grayson's vet care for 10 days of intensive treatment to save his life has reached $2000 and unfortunately he will need additional follow up work.   All donations to the Cat Shack are tax deductible and will help the group to provide the care that Grayson and other cats like him require for the best chance of life after adoption.

Who is Grayson? His caretaker Sheila tells us that "Grayson is not just a pet, he's my companion. I live on my own and Grayson helps me with my anxiety. I love him!  When I adopted him I knew that I had the financial ability to pay for his food and regular vet care, but I never expected him to become so sick right after I adopted him. Even with my SSI and a payment plan with my regular vet, I can't afford all the tests and treatments that he needs to have a chance to be healthy"

Even though Grayson was not adopted through the Cat Shack rescue, the Cat Shack members knew we needed to try to help him become well.  Sheila noticed Grayson was sick shortly after she adopted him, so she did the right thing and took him to her vet for care. Her vet determined that he was very sick, yellow with jaundice and that he needed further tests. Unfortunately these treatments were outside of Sheila's ability to pay. That's when Grayson was transferred to one of the Cat Shack's vet's, Perkiomen Animal Hospital, to received life-saving treatment.

While in the care of Perkiomen Animal Hospital under the Cat Shack's account, Grayson received bloodwork, x-rays, ultrasounds, Antibiotics, steroids and fluids. He was found to be suffering from severe jaundice, elevated white blood cell count, dangerous dehydration and severe anemia. He was kept at Perkiomen Animal Hospital for 10 days until his jaundice was almost totally corrected and he was able to maintain hydration without receiving IV fluids. He is now eating and drinking normally and with his super personality he has become a staff favorite at the hospital! The vets felt that he could be returned to Sheila (who has been missing him terribly) at least temporarily while we monitor his progress and repeat his bloodwork after 10 days at home.

We had hoped that Grayson was going to be firmly on the road to recovery after his extended stay at the vet's office, but unfortunately this is not yet the case. We are thankful that his liver, kidney and other blood values look relatively good now, our vets are concerned that even with continued antibiotics his white blood cell count has steadily climbed and his anemia, while not getting worse, is still well below normal.

In addition to the vet work already performed, he will need more bloodwork and there is a chance that he will require a blood transfusion if his anemia does not improve more on it's own.

Any donations, no matter how small, will help tremendously.

Grayson's caretaker has been very touched that the Cat Shack members have helped her with everything from transporting Grayson to and from the vet, daily updates  helping to fund his vet care. Thank you to all of the generous volunteers and supporters that make it possible for the Cat Shack rescue to help cats like Grayson.
