The I'm Glad I'm A Girl Summer Camp takes place each year on Mary Seacole Hall, UWI Mona. The programme targets girls 13-17 years and engages them in activities and workshops which are focused on the empowerment of the Girl Child. Jamaica has a wonderful reputation in many respects; worldclass athletes, talented singers and dancers, brilliant academics and is regarded as one of the best places in the world to take a vacation.
But Jamaica also has an uncomfortable underbelly as it relates to sexual abuse and incest especially with the girl child. Several agencies and organizations struggle with the brutal aftermath of these realities. The truth is we need to do better to create the kinds of homes for our children to thrive and we need to do more to protect our children from being victimized by adults in and out of their family.
This camp creates a safe space for girls to have conversations about themselves, to learn about the international conventions and laws which protect them, to find out about the organizations and institutions established to protect their rights and to begin to explore their dreams as they think about life after high school.
The camp will take place this year from July 24 to July 30. I will need the funds about July 17, 2016.
This means a lot to me, I survived and triumphed through pregnancy at 16 years and a child at 17. I am moved by the plight of the girl child and the idea that there are some girls who were previously defined as 'uncontrollable.' I keep remembering the seven girls who died in the Armadale fire and the survivors who still suffer.
This camp must happen, so many girls and young women have their hearts set on it. I wish, pray and hope that we can raise the necessary funds.
