25,000 Meals for Cambodian Children

Tax deductible
Hello,

My name is Forrest Curran and I am the founder of the Purple Buddha Project, and I want to start the year off with positive vibes. At the moment I am fundraising to provide 25,000 meals to school children attending school in Siem Reap. As one of the poorest countries in Asia, lacking money to buy enough food to feed their families, most children of Cambodia are unable to attend school, leading to a downward cycle of poverty and hunger. In partnership with CFC, a registered 501 (c) charity who currently has 6,400 students in attendance through their 21 schools of which students are able to attend free of cost, we are looking to make sure that the students are well fed and are able to focus during school hours. Funds will be 100% directly be going towards Caring for Cambodia's Food for Thought Program. Please help Purple Buddha Project bring about big changes to Cambodia in the coming year.

Namaste,
Forrest Curran

Caring for Cambodia is a non-profit, non-governmental, charitable organization committed to ensuring a high-quality education for 6,400 children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. CFC guarantees well-equipped classrooms, locally trained teachers, a meal for every student, uniforms, basic health and hygiene care — and often a bicycle for the children to attend school.

Caring for Cambodia Programs:

Teacher Training - Experienced teachers at the Singapore American School and the Tanglin Trust School were the pioneers of this program where teachers from both schools work in teams to develop and deliver hands-on training workshops at the CFC schools to help build the teacher's curriculum.

Home-Based Mother Teaching - Caring for Cambodia’s early education program works on a home-based concept, teaching mothers and preschoolers together. While the young children learn to count, color and explore play, our preschool coordinator and her staff also instruct the mothers about health and hygiene, nutrition and child development. Then key mothers from the villages make home visits to review the lessons.

Education - Currently CFC sponsors 6,400 students whom otherwise would go without a primary education. Due to economic factors, most children in Cambodia must forgo education in order to support their family.

Health Education - Good habits formed early on ripple back to the family, and the community. Good health is a skill set taught by experts from pre-school through grade 12 with age appropriate curriculum. CFC wants to see our students learn what being healthy means, providing water using biosand filters, passing out toothbrushes, and educating children on sanitation and proper hygiene.

Food For Thought - In an area where most of the population survives on less than $1USD/day, many families simply cannot afford to feed every child. This program relieves parents of the burden of feeding school-age children, and provides them with a great incentive to register and send their children to school.

TEDTALK: Caring For Cambodia founder Jamie Amelio

I originally started the project out of a dormitory room at the University of Texas at Austin when I was 19, knowing very little that this project would change my life forever. From a simple Tumblr blog to becoming a fair-trade cooperative making jewelry in Cambodia, I cannot be any more grateful for the opportunities and chances that the project has opened in my life for the last 4 years. Throughout the years, the Purple Buddha Project has 100% been an independent movement funded by the fans, yours truly. In part to the crowdfunding success on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Thunderclap as well as a large following of over 200,000+ followers on our social who help spread the word about the project, we’ve been able to grow something literally out of the ground based on supporters from around the world who truly believe in what I am trying to do.

Being from Japan, in my culture we end the year by writing on a piece of a paper, a Japanese character that symbolizes our reflection about the year and our feelings towards the New Year. This year when it came time for me to write my reflection about my hopes for the new year of 2016, I started crying. When I really drew a blank with what to write, I guess I finally came to the conclusion that I’m lost. For a long time I’ve been hiding a lot of pain inside, refusing to let it get out of behind the scene in the project, but it’s time for it to all come out because I’ve disappointed a lot of the fans who’ve had faith in me for a long time now. From having to fire one of my best friends, my Dad being having to have ER surgery at home while I’m abroad in Cambodia, to supplier and warehouse issues; it was a year of heartbreak, but what I’m disappointed about the year, is how I let down a lot of the people who have had my back from day one. To the people who’ve always supported me, I owe everyone the humble truth that I was about the go through a very vicious and dark cycle of depression, and perhaps I can say that I forgot who I was.

To the fans of Purple Buddha Project, I promise to never let you down again, I’m back. I promise to never go back on that promise. I promise I’m not afraid to make a stand. For me starting 2016 I’m going to face my demons of depressions and hold my ground because I am much more powerful than my problems. It’s my decision to face my problems and emotions for me, but admittedly I’m probably subliminally doing this for all the people who have supported me for so long because you understand me because you’ve been through the same road. I do not regret 2015, however, I am grateful for the experience and lessons of the year and have humbly learned that you cannot truly understand yourself until you are lost.

For the year of 2016, I want to start the year off by spreading good vibes, and am asking for your support in providing 25,000 meals through the “Food For Thought” program of Caring for Cambodia, a registered 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, with all funds going directly going into their account. Having travelled the world years ago when I was lost once, I learned the unique human experience of finding yourself by loving others, and I would like 2016 to be all about love, both to others and to myself. Caring for Cambodia is responsible for 21 schools in Siem Reap, providing education for children, teacher education, and health education to the local community with their “Food For Thought” program providing the Cambodian students with at least two meals per day, increasing attendance, decreasing illnesses, and ensure that the children can focus during classes.
