Send Delegate Ashley 2 DNC 4 Bernie
My name is Ashley Bynum and I have successfully secured the support of my district convention to be one of three Bernie Sanders delegates from the Virginia 8th Congressional District to this July’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. District 8 is comprised of Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, and portions of Fairfax County. Based on the results of the March 1st Virginia primary, District 8 was allocated 3 Bernie Sanders delegates to Hillary Clinton’s 5. I have been selected as the sole female Bernie Sanders delegate for these crucial Democratic strongholds in Northern Virginia, and am thrilled to be a representative of my community, along with Mark Wiznitzer and Boyd Walker.
I am asking for your financial assistance, so that I can finance the expenses associated with attending the June 18th Virginia Democratic Convention in Richmond, and the July 25-28th Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. As many of you know, I was very recently employed as the Operations Director for the campaign here in VA, and after the expiration of my contract with the campaign, I thought serving one of the campaign’s delegates to Philly was the best way to keep Feeling the Bern!
A lot of you already know this about me, but, I’m originally from the South Bronx, and moved to Virginia in 2012, after graduating from St. Bonaventure University with a BA in political science. As a graduating senior, my first venture into politics was working on President Obama’s re-election campaign. I moved to VA to pursue a graduate degree at GW in Political Management. While at GW, I worked for Will Smith’s campaign in Maryland, and worked on Patrick Hope’s congressional bid for a short stint. After graduating, I was a Field Organizer in the Hunter Mill District in Fairfax County for Senator Mark Warner, where I successfully mobilized a turnout of nearly 49%, ranking the 2nd highest in the county. Last year, I was offered a role on Senator Sanders’ South Carolina team. I started out as a Regional Field Director, then moved into a role as Scheduling and Advance Director, before becoming the state’s Faith-Based Outreach Director, ultimately ending as Virginia’s Operations Director. On the campaign, I had the pleasure to work with Campaign Manager Jeff Weaver, Senior Adviser Phil Fiermonte, SC State Director Chris Covert, VA State Director Peter Clerkin, and Marcus Ferrell, the Southeastern Political Director for African American Outreach, and so many more. As VA Operations Director, I opened up 5 offices and managed 24 staff, and a budget of $265,000. I made sure volunteers had what they needed to assist Bernie and his dream of a political revolution. I stand before you guys today, thankful for your support and your faith in my ability to adequately represent the Virginia 8th!
Our Democratic delegates decided to send representation that coincides with the coalition of voters the Senator is trying to turn out, in order to secure a win in this primary! I know that I am best able to represent Virginia, as well as give a voice to the coalition of young, independent, and minority voters that are the source of the Senator’s strength at the ballot box and in the polls. Polls consistently show that Senator Sanders is the best Democrat to take on Donald Trump in the fall. I feel that as an African American female millennial, and a previous campaign staffer, I have the grit and drive to best represent these passionate voters, alongside the 108 other members of the Virginia delegation in Philadelphia this July. According to the misleading media, the Senator apparently lacks supporters who look like me, but here I am ready and willing to give his vision a voice. Your support would solidify that vision.
We're 8 days away from the VA State Convention in Richmond, and about a month and a half from the National Convention in Philadelphia! As delegates here in VA, we've been connected with a campaign liaison by the name of Kelly McCurdy, who is requiring us to stay in the delegation hotel in Philadelphia. Using your generous contributions thus far, we have secured an AirBNB (refundable in exchange for a hotel room) for the duration of the convention, but considering these new requirements, we have been instructed to raise additional funds to meet that expense. Please feel free to contribute anything (even a few bucks- or Bernie's favored $27 contribution), but above all please share this far and wide!
In Solidarity, Yours,
