Hi guys! Niamh (Herbert) here. Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll definitely have heard me blabbering on about the 'Disability and I' project I've set up with my amazing friend Laura.
Laura and I both live with different types of disability, and so we both a have a personal insight into the treatment of disabilities and the people with disabilities here in Ireland. We set up an organisation called Disability and I to help us to advocate for and raise awareness of issues that impact the lived of those with disabilities in our society. A kind of "for people with disabilities, by people with disabilities'' charity.
The ultimate goal and original idea behind this charity is that of producing a documentary about the plight of those who have different disabilities in the different parts of our world that have ratified the UNCRPD. We aim to raise awareness., and support whoever we can along the way.
As our first fundraising event, we've enlisted the help of some amazing friends to take part in our 24hr Wheelchair Challenge!!! On the 14th of March 15 students will go about their day-to-day lives in Trinity, but the twist is that they'll be bound to a wheelchair for the whole 24 hours! I've had so many people ask me what it's like to live my life with the aid of a wheelchair, and I thought that putting people in my own shoes would be the easiest way to explain. All proceeds go towards the awareness campaigns and documentry run by Disability and I.
Any ammount of money, a euro, two euro, a fiver, will mean the absolute world to myself and Laura as we continue on with our little project. All of the support thus far has been amazing, and I really just can't express how greatful we are.
