Family Service Day

How do I raise a child that is committed to service, empathetic to the many struggles within the city, but also respectful of the spaces that serve those populations? How do I find opportunities that are genuinely helpful, but also respectful of the limitations of a young child? These are the questions that I ask myself often as I navigate raising a child in Baltimore City. It is important to me that we expose our youngest citizens to the notion of giving back to the community, but at the same time a struggle to negotiate appropriate times and places, since the very nature of young children makes them, at times, less than helpful!

With that in mind, I am working with Patterson Park Public Charter School to host a "Care Package Creation Day" this summer. This event will be service oriented and give children the opportunity to create care packages for our city's population experiencing homelessness. Additionally it will serve as a developmentally appropriate platform to educate young people about homelessness and the value of giving back in a safe, family friendly, environment.

This project is a way to give back to the community, provide necessary resources to the many unhoused individuals in the city, and to create a culture of empathy in our youngest citizens.

All of the proceeds from this campaign will go directly to purchasing items for the event, including: cereal bars, beef jerky, hand sanitizer, sunblock, bottled water, trail-mix, first aid supplies, feminine hygiene products, personal hygiene products, and bags.
