Hello,
My name is Taylor Sack and I am a 20 year old student currently studying at the University of New Hampshire. When I was 17 years old I was in a serious skiing accident in which I broke my back and was left paralyzed from the chest down. I spent 10 days in the I.C.U. and was then flown to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where I remained for close to 3 three months. I was extremely fortunate in the sense that I received incredible support both emotionally and financially from a vast array of people. There were countless fundraisers and donations from people that were close friends, family and community members, and even complete strangers.
However, not everybody is as fortunate as myself. There are a number of families that are thrown into financial hardship while trying to cope with the acquisition of a new disability. This can lead to unimaginable amounts of stress and can make their recovery and quality of life decline.
I am roughly 3 years post injury and have still not returned to the Shepherd Center to check in on all of my therapist and let them know how well I am doing. For these reasons, I am planning to handcycle to Atlanta, Georgia, this summer.
This is where I need your help! I would love to raise some funds that I could bring with me and present to a patient at the Shepherd Center. Not everybody has been as fortunate as myself and I know that there will be an inpatient who needs our help. Hopefully, the funds will serve as a financial help to a family in need. While me, having sustained a spinal cord injury, handcycling 1,200 miles can serve as some type of emotional support for both the patient and their family. I am planning to leave on June 15 and will do my best to keep you guys updated with how training is going. Having been through the rehabilitation process, I know just how much someone else's gesture can mean. I appreciate any support you can provide whether it is funds or simply following my process and helping to spread the word. Thank you for taking the time to read this page and stay happy!
