John "Woody" Orofino here and thanks for visiting my GoFundMe page. 

Since my mom's passing in May 2014, I've made it a mission of mine to do everything I can to raise awareness and funds for Ovarian Cancer research. 

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be more than 22,000 new cases of Ovarian Cancer diagnosed this year, and that more than 15,000 women will die as a result.

When one is diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages, the 5-year survival rate is more than 90%. Due to Ovarian Cancer's non-specific symptoms and lack of early detection tests, only 19% of all cases are found at this early stage. If caught in stage III or higher, the survival rate can be as low as 30.6%.

My goal is to raise $30,000 for the Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCSF.  With an additional $30k, the total amount raised over the past 3 years in the name of my late mother, will be over $100,000!

100% of all proceeds will go to Ovarian Cancer Research.

The past two years I've set out into the wilderness as a fundraising event; the first being in 2014 when I solo hiked the 220 mile John Muir Trail; and last year hiking with friends on the 90 mile High Sierra Trail. This year however, I will be riding my bike down Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles (550 miles). I'll be setting out on August 25th and ending in Santa Monica on September 2nd. 

With September being National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month my goal is to have all funds collected and donated by the end of September.

Losing my mother was and is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with, but each year we are able to raise awareness and funds, gives us the opportunity to decrease the amount of mothers, daughters, sisters and role models we lose every year.
