A love for racing between great friends is what drove an American dream to reality on the night of September 10th 2016 where the 43rd running of the World 100 was being held at Eldora Speedway.
The two friends met one racing weekend when they both presented a 79 car to compete. The famous 79 was born and the groundwork for a common dream was put into motion: the World 100. Pat and Jason Ferguson joined Shane Unger in order to compete in local Indiana and Ohio races to prepare for the World 100. Three very blue collar men put their heart and soul into the number 79. The day of the big event had arrived and they were first in line for their car to be inspected as they anticipated a tough but exciting day. They thought their chances of winning weren’t the greatest, but finally making it to the big dance, they felt they had already won part of their dream.
Unfortunately the excitement ended in tragedy when Shane lost his life in turn 3 of heat two. What seemed like a common accident turned into heartbreak and the racing community lost of a member of their family forever. After many discussions, the Unger family requested that the Fergusons continue the dream because “that’s what Shane would want.” Pat and Jason decided they wanted to build a tribute car for Shane but unfortunately the car was totaled and they need help starting over. This team put all they had into the number 79 and just do not have the funds to start again.
