Healing for Gena Milagros

I am on a mission to raise funds for a family in Mexico that truly needs help and support for their little girl who has had a brain tumor which has caused a number of very difficult neurological problems.

I met her grandmother, Lupe, in the city of San Miguel de Allende, when I employed her  to clean and take care of my house there. During that time she introduced me to  her daughter, Yessenia and her two adorable daughters, Genie, 7, and Lupita, 1and1/2.  I was so impressed with this family, who despite their extreme poverty and lack of basic comforts, are an exceptionally loving and hard working family of 8 living in two rooms without hot water or heat.  

I had been away from Mexico for a while and when I returned, Lupe told me that her family was in trouble, and brought me a set of her granddaughter’s X-rays showing a long and deep incision that ran from the front of her forehead to the back of skull.

I learned that Genie, who is only 7, had been experiencing blinding headaches. an increasingly awkward gait, fatigue, speech and vision difficulties, seizures, and over time had lost the use of her right arm and hand.

Because they had no money, they were turned away time and time again from receiving medical help, and unbelievably were told there was nothing wrong with her - she was just faking her symptoms to get attention.
After many months of her mom and family desperately seeking help, they finally found an organization that helped them get the proper medical attention so badly needed. She was tested and diagnosed with very large brain tumor, which though not malignant, had caused significant brain damage and neurological problems requiring major surgery.

Although they have received some support to pay for the medical procedure, her subsequent therapy has had to be paid out of their pockets. Her mom quit her job to be there for her full time, and during this time as well they experienced the tragic loss of Genie’s father.
Since then she has been making some progress, but ongoing rehabilitation will be necessary, which hopefully over time, will improve and repair her right arm and hand, her ability to walk, speak and see clearly, and help to restore her confidence in herself.

In addition to her physical therapy visits to the hospital, I have also found a Feldenkrais Practitioner in San Miguel who is wonderful with children. Feldenkrais Method is particularly effective in helping to heal brain trauma and damage, and uses movement and play with children in order to stimulate the brain to create new neural pathways to address the many physical, cognitive and emotional problems associated with traumatic brain injuries.

Despite all that she’s been through, Genie is an amazingly intelligent, loving and kind child with a strong and beautiful spirit.

I am committed to helping Genie and her family recover and heal from the trauma of their struggle to find the support they have so badly needed, and will continue to need for the long road ahead.
