FoodLab to Farm to Cafeteria

Donation protected
Pacific Elementary School’s FoodLab is located in the small rural and agricultural community of Davenport, CA.  Pacific Elementary FoodLab is one of the largest and longest running farm-to-table school program in the Santa Cruz area.  FoodLab emphasizes the power of gardening, cooking, and eating together by bringing these people together.

We would like to share this model with the rest of the country at the National Farm to Cafeteria Conference in Madison, WI.  We need your help to get there!

Pacific Elementary School’s FoodLab plays an important role in the cohesion of the school community by bringing children and adults from different cultural backgrounds together to create and enjoy healthy meals at the same table.
As part of the National School Lunch Program it is the responsibility of FoodLab to educate the whole child and provide equal access to nutritious meals for the entire community.

While the Pacific Elementary FoodLab program has been successful in teaching students for 32 years now, we feel it is necessary to share our model with schools nationwide and network with other programs. An increasing number of schools have garden programs, which is a progressive step in educating children about healthful foods and their origin, but we feel that the educational cycle is incomplete. In order to educate the whole child about healthy foods, it is just as important to make sure they are fed well and understand how food makes the cycle back to the kitchen. We have children actively learning in outdoor gardens, why not take it to the next level and teach them to cook the food they so carefully grow?

The problem that Pacific Elementary FoodLab faces currently is lack of funding to propel our model forward into other schools. With the requested amount of funding, we would be able to ensure that other schools would be able to take the next step from the LifeLab to the Pacific Elementary FoodLab.

We are traveling to Madison, WI on June 2nd and returning June 5th.  The travel expeneses requested are for the FoodLab Director and the LifeLab Coordinator to fly roundtrip to Madison, including food and lodging and the two day substitute rate for the FoodLab Director.

Thank you so very much for your support in sharing FoodLab with the rest of the country!
