Dear El Paso Community Member:
My name is Raquel Kuker and I am the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) teacher/coordinator at Parkland Middle School. This school year, 12 of our STEM students competed in the Technology Student Association (TSA) Competition. This was our first year entering the competition and Parkland Middle was the only middle school representing YISD.
At the regional level, we competed against EPISD and several charter schools and were very excited when 6 of our students advanced to the state level, however, there were limited funds to support their trip so Ms. Bouche (6th grade STEM teacher) and I got certified to drive for the district and we drove the 6 students to Waco. When we arrived, we quickly realized that the majority of our competitors were either prep schools or from affluent districts within Dallas, Houston, and Austin and had vast experience competing at the state level. We learned a great deal and were extremely proud when 4 of our students placed at the national level!!!!!
Therefore, four of our outstanding middle school STEM students will have the opportunity to compete on June 28- July 2, 2016 at the Technology Student Association (TSA) National Competition located in Nashville, Tennessee. These students earned 1st place in STEM Animation and 2nd place in Leadership Strategies; however, we need to fundraise $2,500 to send them to compete at the national level.
The competition showcases STEM students from each state and is designed to increase students’ experience by giving them the opportunity to display their talent through designing, building and presenting ideas relevant to issues in today's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. We are very proud to be one of only two middle schools representing El Paso at the national level and the only middle school representing YISD!! This opportunity can only be made possible through the generous donation of STEM supporters in our community. Therefore, we are asking for assistance from our community.
