"Just $25 can restore someone's sight"

These upcoming April school holidays a bunch of mates and I will be travelling to Vietnam, however it's not going to be a holiday. We will be experiencing Vietnamese culture and history, but most importantly we will be doing community work throughout the country. We will be building two houses, meeting school children and teaching them english and games, and will travel to an Agent Orange centre and meet kids who have been affected by the terrible chemical that causes a series of cancers and deformities. Additionally, we will be donating money raised to these centres and in particular, the Fred Hollows Foundation, some information about the foundation is below. A donation will go a long way, you could bring someone in Vietnam sight.

What are the eye health problems?
1.  Almost 70% of Vietnam’s population live in rural villages where problems caused by blindness often go untreated.

2. Many people living in these areas don’t realise that cataract blindness is treatable and that their sight can be restored.

3. There are currently 1.4 million people needing cataract surgery in Vietnam, so there’s a lot of work to be done.

4. The impact of blindness goes beyond not being able to see. Children born with cataract may never go to school, adults are unable to work and contribute to the community and sadly, elderly people can have many grandchildren, yet never see their faces.

What does The Fred Hollows Foundation do now in Vietnam?
We invest in Vietnam’s eye health workforce - training surgeons, nurses and health workers – a key way to address the country’s avoidable blindness. We also help provide infrastructure and equipment, raise community awareness, and work with governments to make sustainable changes in eye health.

What's been achieved in 2017?
1. Conducted eye screenings with more than 1.2 million people including 269,715 school children.

2. Supported more than 95,600 eye operations and treatments including 45,641 cataract surgeries and 683 diabetic retinopathy procedures. We also distributed 9,500 pairs of glasses.

3. Trained 26 eye surgeons, 31 clinic support staff, 358 community health workers and 9,177 teachers who went on to educate more than 476,000 in eye health.

4. Equipped 8 medical facilities and 9 community health centres with basic eye health equipment.
