In 2013 our family was affected by a diagnosis of Sarcoidosis.
Sarcioidosis is a rare condition which causes small patches of red and swollen tissue to develop in the organs of the body. For many people who receive this diagnosis, symptoms often improve without treatment. For these people, the symptoms are not usually severe. However, a few people find their symptoms develop gradually and worsen over time, to the point where they become severely affected. This is known as chronic sarcoidosis. In the summer of 2013, Nik received the diagnosis of chronic sarcoidosis.
Sarcoidosis is estimated to affect about one in 10,000 people in the UK. There is currently no cure.
Sarcoidosis was found to affect Niks heart, lungs, eyes and brain. The main symptoms are extreme shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, joint pain, red and sore eyes, an abnormal heart rhythm and pain in the bones.
It is thought that sarcoidosis happens because the immune system has gone into "overdrive", where the body starts to attack it's own tissue and organs.
Sarcoidosis is a rare disease and does not receive sufficient attention from pharmaceutical companies or medical researchers.
Your sponsorship will go towards vital research into sarcoidosis, and support Sarcoidosis UK's work. Any sponsorship raised Will be doubled by the British lung foundation meaning that YOU could make a real difference in finding a cure for Sarcoidosis
