My name is Joshua Torres and this page is for my mom Brenda Spence Cavanaugh. She recently has been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer and is currently taking treatments at the James Center in Columbus Ohio. She will be receiving five days of radiation with a day of chemo totaling six weeks. During this time she will be traveling from Findlay to Columbus, and will be staying at a hotel during the week and coming home on Friday for the weekend.
She has been out of work for three months and is only receiving a few hundred dollars a month with disability insurance. Her husband Rick Spence is still working, but has missed work a few days a week to get her to Dr. appointments and emergency hospital visits, because the tumor that is on her lung is growing so big that it is putting pressure on her heart and creating other problems.
My sister Nicole has flown home from Denver Colorado to help. She will be taking Mom to and from Columbus and staying with her in the hotel while receiving treatments. Rick can continue to work and try to bring in as much money as he can to supplement the missing wage my mother was bringing in.
This is my Moms third bout with cancer. The Dr's believe that the cancer she has right now in her lungs, is a reaction to the radiation she received in the 80's from her first fight with Hodgkins lymphoma. My mother has put together a few benefits for families that were going through the same thing that she is going through right now, and raised close to 30k total. She is always thinking about others and how she can make things easier for those that are going through tough times.
Thats why I am putting this page together. I do not expect to raise as much as she has, but enough to help with travel expense, food, gas and lodging for both her and my sister while they are going to Columbus for the next six weeks.
So i am going to do the Hocking Hills triathlon and the Columbus triathlon for a 'flash' fundraiser. The first race is Sept.7th and is a 400 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run totaling 15.75 miles. The second race is a week later on Sept.15th which is a 750 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run totaling 15.95 miles. With both races combined it will total 31.75 miles.
I am asking everyone to please help by sponsoring my mom for every mile I do, or for the races I complete. Anything will help please show some love through
