Amazing Albie

Donation protected
I've set up this page to mark Albie's first birthday and to raise funds to help us support and care for Albie and our other gorgeous children, as Albie battles liver disease and awaits his life saving liver transplant.

These funds will also help to support us financially while Albie is in hospital receiving his transplant as Dom will need to take around a month off work. Having a seriously ill child has had a huge impact on us as a whole family and has severely affected our finances. It would mean a lot to us if our friends and family could donate a few pennies rather than buying Albie birthday presents this year if they feel comfortable doing so.

This is our story:

On the 4th August 2014 our beautiful Albie Bird arrived safely into the world at home.

Within a few days of Albie being born Dom and I had a feeling that something wasn't quite right with him. We sort endless advice from midwives, health visitors and doctors but no one took us seriously and told us that Albie was fine. Finally at 7 weeks old a doctor listened to us and noticed that Albie was jaundiced at 7 weeks. He insisted we go into our local hospital the following morning. At 4pm the following day a doctor at our local hospital sat us down and broke the news to us that our precious little boy was seriously ill, that his liver was severely damaged and that we were being admitted and then transferred to Kings College Hospital in London. Our world fell out from under us. I remember asking the doctor if Albie was going to die. No mother should ever have to have that thought or ask that question.

A week later Albie was diagnosed with a rare form of liver disease called biliary atresia where the bile ducts from the liver to the gut are blocked and don't allow bile to drain out of the liver causing the liver to become damaged and scarred.

A week after his diagnosis he underwent a major operation called a Kasai procedure where his bile ducts were removed and a loop of his intestine was attached to his liver. He was just 64 days old. This operationhas only a 50-60% chance of success. If it fails the only option is a liver transplant.

Albie initially did well and we had a wonderful family Christmas. But in January he started to get poorly again and in February the doctors at Kings broke the news to us that he would need a transplant.

So now we are just waiting for "the call" but as Albie is blood group O we've been told he will wait a long time for a liver. Due to this we are looking into me being a living donor for him but this will mean both me and Albie having major surgery and Dom needing even more time off work.

Albie has been in and out of hospital a lot but has shown immense courage and spirit. He's always happy, always smiling and true delight to everyone around him. He is our little fighter and no words can describe how much we adore and love him and our other incredible children.
