Mission Trip to Third World Country

Hello! My name is Jessica Hotaling and I am in my second year of Dental Hygiene school at Oregon Tech on the Salem Campus.
I am absolutely loving every single minute of being in this program. I am overwhelmed with joy knowing that I can help people as best that I can by bettering their oral health, which in return increases their overall health. Every moment I spend with my patients cleaning their teeth and building relationships has become my new favorite passion and my ultimate love in life. It is amazing to me how much of an impact I can have on someone’s life, whether they know this or not. To me, knowing I did everything I could to help them the best way that I can is all that matters.
One amazing thing that I love about this school and this program is that every year the school allows a group of students in the Junior class to travel to a third world country on an externship to serve their community. We went through an interview process and I am so proud to say that this coming summer, August 31st-September 10th, I have been blessed with the most incredible opportunity to travel to Jamaica! I will be cleaning as many people’s teeth as I can and I will be venturing out into the schools to educate children on the importance of their oral health. This is huge for children to learn this early, so they know how to prevent disease.
The reason we are going to Jamaica is because there is little to no access to dental care in the rural communities. There is only one public dentist for every 100,000 people. That is extremely low causing many people in need of our help. Imagine having pain with your teeth and never being able to go see your dentist. That is what those people are going through. This is why I have such a heartfelt passion to go there and help as many people as I can to minimize the pain they are feeling and to prevent the disease from getting any worse and allowing to educate them on the importance of maintaining their oral health.
I feel as though this is my calling and the path that God has chosen me to follow. I am extremely excited to pursue my dream of going on a mission trip to serve others. This will be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I am so excited to spend my time in Jamaica this summer. My classmates and I are so incredibly excited to go on this journey together and be able to say that we have made a change in so many people's lives.
I have never been one to ask for money, but this trip will be a little on the spendy side. I am doing everything I can to fundraise as much as possible. My goal is to raise at least $3000. I would truly appreciate your support. Even if it is not financial, I am still forever grateful.
