Zero Waste Shop in Leeds
Hello and welcome to my campaign. I would firstly like to thank you for taking the time to visit this page, just by having a read through this post, you're already making a change.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME
I am currently a one man team, supported by my wife and dog! Originally from the West Yorkshire country side, but for the last two years I have been living the city life. I have grown tired and frustrated with my own wasteful way of shopping, simply because I have had such limited options.
WHAT I WANT TO DO
'Zero waste' or 'packaging free' shops are starting to pop up around the UK now, but we're yet to see one open in the North. I plan to open a zero waste shop in Leeds in 2018, to offer shoppers the alternative we so desperately need.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT (THE FACTS)
In the UK alone we use 13 billion plastic bags every year. That's 13 billion more plastic bags in existance than there were this time last year (and that's only from the UK).
Since the 1950's we've created a ridiculous 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic. That's enough plastic to cover the entire of the UK, ankle deep, 10 times over.
Every year, plastic in the oceans kills at least 100,000 mammals and 1 million sea birds.
Bisphenol A (BPA) commonly used as a chemical building block in plastic bottles and other plastic packaging, can cause heart disease and diabetes in humans who have a high level of exposure.
A study published in 2014 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) found that at least 88 percent of the Earth’s ocean surface is polluted with plastic debris of some sort, and this percentage hasn't reduced since then.
WHY I NEED YOUR HELP
I'm ready to go! I want to make this change, but unfortunately, getting started won't be cheap and so I need your help. Any donation would be greatly appreciated, and an investment in a better future for our country, and ultimately, our planet.
The funds raised on this page will go towards the initial rent payment for shop premises, fitting the shop with the best equipment to keep produce fresh, ensuring that I can stock locally sourced, organic food and every other little thing that starting an Eco friendly, sustainable business requires!
