Las Cruces Academy (LCA, lascrucesacademy.org) is a small, ethnically diverse non-profit private school serving students in the greater Las Cruces, New Mexico area. LCA is truly a community-oriented school and serves children in early kindergarten through 8th grade. The general LCA philosophy is to provide a challenging, student-led, and organic learning experience, with opportunities for each member to grow in the focus areas of science, languages, and mathematics. Many children that make up the student body are gifted, academically advanced in a particular subject, or simply seek individual learning experiences that are not met by traditional school systems. We are located in the border region of New Mexico and are excited to offer all children of underserved backgrounds the opportunity to access educational programs that nurture their individual strengths.
The most significant yet challenging aspect of the success of LCA is that it operates solely on the money it receives year-to-year by way of parents (e.g., tuition, personal donations, and student donations), donations from local businesses and private donors within the community, and fundraisers (e.g. book fairs, dinners, etc.). Despite LCA’s effort to raise money, the school is continuously challenged by a lack of funds for many of its programs in particular the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities.
Therefore the constituency of LCA (faculty, staff, parents, and students) seek your support to raise $10,000.00 so that we can complete a sustainable “STEM Laboratory (STEMLab).” This STEMLab will be housed in a dedicated room whereby scientific materials, analytical measurement equipment, tools, and other resources can be housed to perform research projects in biology, physics and chemistry, engineering innovation and design programs, and applied mathematics projects.
LCA is not in a permanent home! We rent a cozy building that is nestled within an art community in Mesilla, NM. Given this fact, we struggle to find space and have limited resources. Our STEMLab will be a dedicated room within our rented space, and it is merely needing equipment and supplies. The requested materials supplement an array of materials donated by the school founders from their scientific careers.
Below is a list of items that we believe will kick off our new STEMLab. We ask your help in supporting our efforts so that we can purchase the items on this list. The STEMLab will provide our community with a space to perform hands-on experiments, to collect data, record measurements, and learn what it is like to be in a scientific environment. The facility will also be used for outreach events, engaging students from around the area.
