Koral's Leukemia Battle

Donation protected
That beautiful girl on the left in the black dress is my 17 year old daughter Koral.  This picture was taken just days before she was diagnosed with Philladelphia Chromosome Positive Acute Lymphblastic Leukemia.  aka PH+ ALL.

June 20, 2015  is the start of Koral's new journey, and marks the day she had to start fighting for her life.  This was also the day our family listened to words no family ever wants to hear.  "Your daughter has Leukemia".

That Saturday morning I took Koral into the urgent care for an ear infection and a "rash" on her leg.  The doctor said that wasn't a rash and explained it was petechiae and needed to get blood work for a blood disorder.  She asked us to go to the hospital to have labs done and that she would call us on Monday or Tuesday.  Knowing that it was something, but not thinking the worst I took Koral to get blood work, and we went home.  Koral went to work at her part time job with Little Caesar's pizza.  (if you ever went to the Little Caesar's in NW Reno, more than likely my daughter helped you with your order)  At 4:15 I received a call that her white blood count was high and platelets were very low.  We were instructed to take her to the ER immediatley.  Once we got there they had Koral put on a mask, and shortly after, everyone including ourselves were instructed to wear a mask.  We wore those masks for almost an hour, scared and not knowing what to expect until a Dr. told us Koral has Leukemia and that we would be care flighted to Oakland Children's Research Hospital immediatley.  We spent 11 days in that hopital before she was discharged to go home on 7/1/5.

I am setting up a Go Fund Account because I don't know what to expect financially.  I just know that between medical bills, missing work, and possible complications that we are going to face a financial challange.  We have countless trips from were we live in Reno, NV to meet with her team of Doctors in Oakland for Chemo treatments.  This month alone we will have traveled back and forth 3 different times, and her chemo schedule has 30 more weeks or more of traveling from Reno,NV to Oakland, CA before she starts the Maintenence phase.

As Koral's mom I thought the Go Fund me account would also help with more than just money.  I set up a PO BOX so that whoever read about her journey would write letters.  We don't know any other teens in our area going through a similar journey, and my understanding is that there really isn't a support group for teens in our area.  I thought letters to Koral would be a good way for her to meet new people and maybe others like her. I also thought it would brighten her day a little.  Its hard enough being a teen, but imagine being diagnosed with Leukemia, losing your hair, and feeling alone your Senior year of high school.

If you would like to write Koral please send mail to PO BOX 34362 Reno, NV 89533.

For anyone that has met my daughter might know that she is starting her Senior year, and expected to graduate with honors.  She is a hard worker and spent her free time studying and working.  She is smart and witty, and has a big heart.

Thank you for listening.
