Habari Gani!

We of United Somali Youth (USY) are very humbled to announce our 2017 summer initiative:

Youth Discovery Africa: a Kenyan Cultural Immersion

Please read on to learn more about why your investment into our program initiative would make a priceless impact on the youth of today, leaders of tomorrow as they travel to Kenya!!!

Cultural identity is a challenging topic for the youth at USY. They hear intense statements from the media and society about many aspects of their culture, and it is important that they are able to interpret this information confidently. For this reason, we have created a cultural immersion trip to Kenya, with the intention of instilling the USY mission to our youth: to provide social, economic, educational and career empowerment for inner city refugee and immigrant youth in Greater Boston, done with the aim of expanding both nationally and internationally. Now more than ever, our youth deserve the opportunity to explore their culture abroad.

Our mission for this trip is to connect our youth with their cultural identities. From this trip we hope they gain knowledge in African history, culture, language, travel, self-discovery, and building self-confidence. The youth will be immersed in cultural differences, challenging realities, and other meaningful community, public, private educational experiences.

Our trip will consist of 12 youth, 4 girls and 8 boys. Our youth are very eagerly preparing for this trip by engaging in a writing empowerment program, participating in African culture classes, and ensuring their academic success in school. We will make stops in Nairobi, Nyeri, Garissa, and Mombasa, visiting with our host educational institutions, including St. Mary’s boys preparatory school, Garissa University, and Nairobi University. We will also spend time amongst community organizations, engaging in community service, sports activities, and cultural engagement. Our trip will be chaperoned by 8 adults, including Executive Director of USY, Said Ahmed, and Assistant Director Anna Lane.

The total cost of this trip includes all hotel accommodations, food, visas, park tours, and travel expenses for our youth. This also ensures health and safety accommodations prior to and during the trip.

Your financial investment into this program will be absolutely life changing for our youth. Thank you so much for your support, and we look forward to sharing with you our journey on the other side. Thank you for supporting the youth of today, leaders of tomorrow in their exploration of Kenya. As the country motto goes, Harambee!! Let us all pull together!!! Thank you!!
