Our organization, UR4Africa, does great work, we are small and hope to continue to impact lives positively, as we work to scale up. We are raising money to help us sustain our programs for another year, provide transportation and food to our members and volunteers, and also support individuals such as our students.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US.
UR4Africa is a space that provides hands on experience in the areas of design, media and technology for African people. Many individuals in Lagos help to keep this place running for students, volunteers and families. It started as a vision to tell positive stories about Nigeria and has evolved into a space where African people work together and creatively find solutions to local problems in their communities.
WHY DO WE WANT TO DO THIS?
UR4Africa is born from the idea that African people should be more involved in the problem solving that takes place in Africa. It is here that we learn and create ways to improve local communities .
We are putting power in the hands of African people by providing a space for them to gain new skills, learn to to take positive action and use their new skills by also giving back to their communities through avenues of teaching, facilitating presentations, assisting with workshops or volunteering or mentoring youth.
All this will help to transform countries in Africa, through people power.
UR4Africa is a very necessary movement! Our continent has so much potential but systems like our governments in Africa, need help. For example, Nigeria is one of the largest countries in Africa with over 170 million citizens. In Tanzania, its 54 million citizens. Many African countries are overwhelmed by the sheer number of citizens, then add the lack of resources, troubles in sectors such as Education and Agriculture. Africans need to play more of an active role in what goes on in Africa.
So we - creative, passionate, action based Africans - organize and develop programs based on gaining knowledge, being active and engaging our communities. UR4Africa exists because of the volunteers, parents, students, families, local and international organizations who have invested their time, dreams and passion into this space. And we are powered by African people who believe in the potential of Africa.
WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?
Last year three of our students were able to attend Parsons the New School for Design on a scholarship.
This year we will be taking one student.
We are also offering opportunities for people to come volunteer with us, to invest in workshops, programs and/or classes so that we can reach more people. We are offering platforms for you to become a teacher or mentor.
The money we raise here means:
Will support one of our students traveling to New York this year to participate in Parsons Summer Academy. It will cover her flight, food, transporation and accommodations. ($2,000)
Will pay for a buses to be made available to students, volunteers and families for our programs from October until early next year. ($1,700)
Will help with supplies and support our travel (by road) to Abuja to work with our Ghanaian partners, Nima Muhinmanchi Art, and other artists and organizations on the Making Noise in Africa project - an initiative to develop collaborative projects that focus on African unity! ($1,500)
And if you are unable to donate money we will take supplies! Anything you got.
We need pencils (all kinds), pens (ball point, illustration pens, etc.), erasers (all kinds), paper, paint sets, scissors, rulers, notebooks, drawing paper, construction paper, creative books, anything that will help our creative organization.
Supplies can be dropped at our office in Ikeja, Lagos or mailed to our Brooklyn, NY mailbox.
