Himalayan Homes Trust Fund

The Himalayan Homes Trust was created by sisters, Jenny Sherpa and Joanne Carrigan, in response to the two devastating Earthquakes that literally shook the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal recently, killing almost 10,000 people, and leaving thousands homeless. With this in mind, the sole purpose of the trust is to raise money to help the remote Himalayan communities rebuild their homes using an eco, sustainable, low cost and relatively quake resistent building technique. Jenny Sherpa's husband is Nepalese - now a British Citizen - and is from the village of Those, Ramechhap District in the East of Nepal. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst affected area's following the second quake in May. This particular village numbers around 100 households, almost all buildings have been completely destroyed. Because of this all surviving inhabitants are living outside under plastic tarpaulin

and other temporary shelters to provide some kind of cover from the fast approaching Monsoon. To date no aid relief has reached this village or any others in the surrounding area. However, with the money we have sent thus far - mostly our own money and generous donations from friends and family - we have ourselves managed to provide food/supplies and shelter for the whole village community. Our aim now is to begin fund raising events to raise more money for this ongoing project and the next phase is to pay for training for some of the villagers to learn a particular Earthbag Building technique. After the training, scheduled for September this year, the first group will be able to use this method to commence re-building their homes and community buildings. It is imperative that these wonderful people also feel empowered to make a difference themselves and these building skills are vital for the reocvery of Nepal. We are committed to raising enough money to fund the first building project in Those, which will be a new School, and will also act as a community shelter whilst other individual homes are being created in the coming months, we have calculated the cost of a three room school/community will cost around £4,000 thus this is the amount we are trying to raise over the coming months. Sustainable building really is the way forward for Nepal, but it has to be the right type of building and this project could really make a difference not only now, but for the future, should a disaster such as this strike again. Please check out our facebook page Himalayan Homes Trust for more information on our project.  Thank you for your interest.
