Empower girls through Education

My name is Shaeesta and I am a physician in the US, training to become an intensivist. I have always been drawn to humanitarian and charitable causes. I am raising money to sponsor the college education of girls in need.
In the past I worked with an orphanage in Nepal and helped it become established and recognized by other NGOs in the area. The result of the work was so fulfilling that I made it my mission to continue to work towards humanitarian causes.
The part of the world I come from (Bhadohi, India) is extrememly patriarchial and women face huge social inequalities. They are not viewed as equal citizens and for the most part, are raised with the sole purpose of becoming a dutiful wife and bearing children. Since their only percieved purpose of life is to get married, parents do not feel the responsibility to invest in their education. This makes them highly vulnerable in the society- and they find themselves in situations and arrangememtns that are forced upon them- forced marriages, domestic abuse etc. They feel trapped and don't see a way out. Deprived of skilled education they are at a disadvantage of finding a job that can sustain a living. And so they endure: a life where they always come second, a marriage that they did not choose, abuse- because they are ill-equipped to live an independent life. Breaking free is not an option.
I have been extremely blessed to have parents who raised both me and my brother equally. I feel obligated to fight for those who are not as fortunate. I want to give back to the society and change the status of women by empowering them through education. For the past 6 years my husband and I have been sponsoring the education of a girl. She started out in Nursery is now in 4th grade. She is a top student in her class-we have made a commitment to support her entire career. We are also supporting the college education of another girl who is now in 2nd year of B.Sc (Bachelors of Science)
There are several other girls we want to help out, however our resources are running a little dry (and I am still in fellowship, I dont recieve a full paycheck yet)
We are interested in sponsoring the education of girls interested in the field of paramedical science. The total number of girls we will be able to sponsor, will depend on the amount of the money we can raise. The annual cost to support one girl will be $1500 (1 lakh rupees), 2 girls $3000 and 3 girls $4500. The typical duration of the course (degree vs diploma) will be 2-3 years.
Without sponsorship, these girls will not recieve the opportunity to have a career, and will likely get married to a man they have never met, who is much older than them. They will never have the independence to make their own decisions and will live a life under the shadow of the men in their household.
Please join me in empowering young girls by investing in their future. Your love and donation will make a difference in their lives. Even the smallest amount will help.
