The LaPlantes Journey
A little family history:
10 yrs. ago, Deb was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer in all four quadrants of her breast. After Surgery and treatment, she continues to do well and is in remission.
5 years later, her son Justin was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 23. Justin went through very intense and difficult chemo/radiation treatments in order to shrink and then surgically remove the tumor.He is doing very well and has just reached his 5 year cancer free milestone. Yeah Justin!!!!!!!
Unfortunately, on the day the family learned the good news, Justins dad/Debs husband John, was being diagnosed with a highly aggressive triple hit B-Cell Lymphoma.
John is currently undergoing a very intensive regimen of in -hospital chemotherapy . This will be followed by a stem cell transplant, requiring another 3 week hospital adimission.
All three of the LaPlante family members were treated at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston MA. Maine does not currently have facilities for stem cell transplants.
John is presently on short-term disability which will end in Dec. of 2015. Unfortunately, when short term disability ends, he and Deb will no longer be elible for health insurance through his employment. deb is on leave from her job in order to care for John, and is not offered healthcare through her employment.
Because it takes time for the immune system to completely recover after a stem cell transplant, John will be at risk for certain infections and will need many medications. Even with this highly intensive treatment, it is not common for patients to have several hospitalizations in the first year.
We are asking for help for the LaPlantes during this trying time....
