Youth Employment Program

Donation protected
This project is to fund at least one half of the cost of a new/slightly used YANMAR SV08 1A Mini Excavator.  Because our program is actively working with trail user groups we have other fundraising projects going on that are specific to trails and trail use.  We expect that we cannot raise the total amount via these other projects so it is our hopes that we can gain support from inidividuals that value safe accesses to public lands. (see the 12-24 hours of DISCO   our annual mountain bike endurance race and our other YEP fundraiser ).

Because of the width and height adjustable tracks proposed purchase is the premeir piece of trail building equipment for the rugged and steep Idaho country. This is a good video to show the features of machine.

This is a fundraiser for the Youth Employent Program and is hosted by the Youth Employment Program . YEP is a recognized   21st Century Corps  . We are proud to say that in our 23 years we have been able to employ over 650 rural Idaho youth. This year (2017) we will be able to keep 3 crews of 6 individuals busy working all summer long. Here are some pictures of recent Y.E.P work projects and traning programs.

YEP is primarily a skills training program. We use public land projects to instill the important basic concepts of responsiblity, accountability and team work.  We work in a crew setting to build leadership and team work skills while completing projects that meet our public land agency partners' goals of improving conditions on our public lands. This piece of equipment will be used to expand on the skills training component as we will be providing specific training on the use of the excavator to engage interested individuals.

YEP has agreements with federal and state land management agencies to assist them with their large backlog of  trail and range maintneance projects. While the use of hand tools is the preferred means to accomplish much of what we do, the use of machines is something that will make us more effiecent and cost-effective.

To provide quality workmanship we have been working with the Professional Trail Builders Association (PTBA) to better understand the design and construction of trails.  Staff has attended professional seminars and are prepared to take on the challenge of teaching the skills necessary for mechanical trail building.  We just need a machine,

YEP also has a new partner in Firstfruits Foundation. Firstfruits is assisting us to reach more youth from rural Idaho with its purchase of a 370 acre parcel that has a geothermal hot spring.   As part of YEP's contribution to this project we will create series of trails that will provide the public with a series of trails that range from beginner to advanced.  We will use this project to introduce our program participants to a mechainized trail building program. This program will be directed to our older youth (18-25) to gain experience in running equipment and designing sustaniable trails. The intent is that mechainized trail building is a means to introducuce a new skill set to individuals interested in equipment operation while building a unique set of trails that will serve as an incremintal  training course to mountain bike riders.

In our new 5 year recreation agreement with the Salmon Field Office of the BLM, we have a new single-track construction  trail building project  on the Coninental Divide Trail , ( CDT). This is fantastic project but  due to rocky conditions and to be effective we are going to need equipment to get this large project done.

Our long term goal is to be an active partner that can provide a unique set of skills that typical volunteer programs are not able to provide.  With an active training program, specific projects and an experienced staff YEP is position to meet that goal.

We will be fundraising for as long as it takes to get this equipment so that we can elevate our program and our trail projects to the next level. We hope to get a machine in Salmon by September of 2017 so that we can start digging new trail in April/May 2018.
