The Marion Magnolia Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer
Reverend Marion Tanfield has a story like so many cancer patients, except hers has a twist.
A beautiful lady, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, aunt, friend and Rev T to many. A lady full of warmth and compassion and who always is putting others first.
On the 5th June 2015, Marion’s world was turned upside down; she was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. Her fate told in ICU where she was recovering from what she thought was the intial surgery of a radical antegrade modular pancreatosplenectomy and to remove some tissue in her stomach. However, the surgeon decided to keep her organs intact as the pancreatic cancer had metastasised throughout.
A year earlier she had experienced pain in her side and went to see her doctor. Tests were done and bloods seemed ok, however she was told she had diabetes ( a common misdiagnoses of pancreatic cancer). For months Marion experienced changes within her own body that she had thought was the diabetes. In May 2015, a doctor’s appointment revealed her Billi Reuben count was high and more bloods indicated her tumour markers were up. After CT scans and MRIs were ordered a mass was evident and removal scheduled for June.
The twist is this:-
In true Marion style her eternal wish is to raise money for pancreatic cancer and research. As she truly believes that there is hope, early diagnosis is achievable and survival is possible. Like Marion, so many are diagnosed late and dying from pancreatic cancer, this is a powerful reminder of why research into improving early diagnosis is vital.

Marion also hopes that her diagnosis will not be in vain and that she can help others in the future with fundraising for a cause that is so bittersweet to her.
