School Supplies for Yeni's Students

Notebooks, Uniforms, Shoes Make a Difference

I am raising funds on behalf of my friend Yeni who wants to buy school uniforms, notebooks, shoes, pens and pencils for disadvantaged school children on the island of Sumba in Eastern Indonesia. Sumba is a poor area struggling with lack of resources due to its distance from central government and lack of development. While visiting schools on the island, Yeni discovered that schoolchildren often didn't attend school because their families couldn't afford to buy required uniforms, basic school supplies or even shoes. She believes that providing those supplies will encourage better attendance. With the support of a small organization called Henge Tao Tu Rai Wa (Let’s Do Something Good for Sumba), she has taken on the task of raising enough money to outfit 120 students in four schools. She will arrange for the purchase, shipping and distribution of the school supplies in time for the start of school on August 3rd. She has written a proposal, developed a budget, has started fundraising and has already received donations from some friends. But, she has a long way to go. I am helping her through this campaign and will be sending her all of the funds that are raised.

Island of Sumba

One of the most remote and poorest islands in Eastern Indonesia is Sumba. This island is about 11,150 square kilometers, roughly the size of Massachusetts, with a population of 656,259. Rocky terrain and regular drought are serious challenges to sustainable agriculture and food production. Sumba, nevertheless, possesses rich cultural and ancient traditions.

Due to Sumba’s isolation from the central government in Java and its relatively small size and population, the island has historically lacked adequate support in terms of distribution of the country’s limited resources. The people in Sumba lack adequate housing and food and suffer from malaria and other tropical diseases. Children are the primary victims of disease and malnutrition. In addition, these children do not have access to education because their parents are too poor, or the schools are too far away, or the children are working to support their families, or there are insufficient facilities to accommodate all the children in a community.

Henge Tao Tu Rai Wa believes that a basic education for children is the key to social and economic development. Without a proper education or adequate resources, the people of Sumba cannot break out of the cycle of poverty. Teachers and educators in Sumba believe that providing school supplies will help keep children in school and relieve poor families.

Yeni

Meliani Murtiningsih (Yeni) earned a master’s degree in Christian-Muslim relations at Hartford Seminary in 2010 and then moved to Philadelphia to work for the Dialogue Institute on the campus of Temple University. She recently returned home to Indonesia and is finding ways to continue to serve the needs of her country. Her mother owns a piece of property on Sumba and Yeni's dream is to someday open a small library for children on that land.

While in Hartford, Yeni lived with us for 1 1/2 years. I know firsthand how industrious, conscientious and motivated Yeni is. She knows how to get things done!

Project Goal

Raise $4190 to buy uniforms ($10 each), shoes ($15 each), books ($5 each), pens and pencils ($2 each) for 120 students representing three government schools and one Christian school in Sumba. School starts on August 3rd but fundraising can continue after that.

Your Contribution

We would be thrilled if you would sponsor one student with a gift of $30. Of course you are welcome to give whatever you wish. Your gift is not tax deductible, and you'll need to trust Yeni and me to get your gift to where it needs to go, but it will make a big difference. Because I will pay for the small fee that is charged by Go Fund Me for their services, you can be assured that 100% of your gift will go to Yeni. This site can accept donations from anywhere in the world. If you wish, you can make your donation anonymously -- just be sure to read the fine print when you fill out the donation form.

More Info

Contact me if you would like to read Yeni’s complete proposal. She will be happy to send you a report when the project is complete.

Thank you!
