HOLA!

HI! My name is Armando Sánchez Garcia and I’m opening this campaign to help my brother-in-law Carlos Rafael Monascal, who is 57 years old and had a severe medical emergency recently.

Carlos lives in Caracas, Venezuela and has been suffering from Diabetes Mellitus Type II for a couple of years. He has kept his health under control through diet and medication; however, lately because of the economic and sanitary crisis hitting our country, he has been unable to acquire the drugs that help him control the sugar levels and circulation on his lower limbs. Around the middle of December he began feeling a certain discomfort on his right foot, this became an injury that should have been treated with specific antibiotics which couldn’t be found on time either. The ones found on the black market were too expensive for his and his family’s economic possibilities. The situation kept getting worse and it got to point in which the doctors said they would have to amputate as soon as possible because the infection was very widespread, the more they waited, the more his life was put on risk. On the clinic where he was, it was impossible to operate him since the cost exceeded all their economic possibilities, and the medical insurance (insurance that belongs to an institution of the judicial power, where my sister, his wife, has been working for over 25 years) covered less than 10% of the costs. We, then, got him admitted on the University Hospital of Caracas (Hospital Universitario de Caracas), but they didn’t have any surgical material there, neither anything for the postoperative period nor for the treatment with which it was necessary to undertake the intervention. They had to acquire everything but the prices and time were against them and the operation was urgent as Carlos's health worsened, to the point of fearing for his life. We decided to take him to another private clinic, one that helped us by allowing to hospitalize Carlos and carry out his surgery, along with all the attention he merited. There, we were offered an agreement of a later payment in dollars since for the inflation in Bolivares (official national currency of my country, Venezuela) the clinic would lose a lot of money if it wasn’t done this way. Thus, the 28th of December of 2018 was the day in which Carlos’s leg was amputated above the knee. This was a great humanitarian aid that the clinic, its board, its doctors and its nurses (who by the way gave him the best possible care) granted us.

Now, once the emergency was overcome and he already being in physical and psychological recovery, we are facing the situation in which we must comply with our payment commitment and deal with the expensive treatment and equipment (wheelchair, crutches, medicines, therapies, etc.) Carlos needs now to keep his health and life as good as possible. His left foot isn’t in optimal conditions either as it requires minor surgery to remove from it some injuries that could be dangerous in the future.

Carlos is the head of his family, a musician, a choir conductor and a father of 3 children and Venezuela is going through a serious economic, health and supply crisis. The hospitals are completely abandoned, the medicines are at unreachable prices and insurance doesn’t cover the costs of private care, and Carlos needs permanent treatment and the possibility to acquire specific foods for a diet adapted to his requirements. Besides, and as you can imagine, he can’t work yet, which exacerbates his family's economic situation.

For all these reasons we appeal to the good will of all who can help us, however little it is, it is a help and everything adds up. We will always be very grateful as a family with all the people who can support this campaign.

Please remember: any help is good and if you can not donate, you can contribute by sharing this campaign with your friends and family. Everything counts.

In the name of my brother-in-law, my sister, my nephews, my whole family and myself included, I’ll like to say thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts.
