In 2016, we set off to Seattle to pursue musical dreams, most important of which is Andrea's desire to teach others to sing. We had been making plans for months but the housing market went nuts. By the time we arrived in Seattle, housing prices were over 1/3 higher than when we started laying plans and have kept rising, since.
Last September, we thought we had a plan (and a house) to repair our credit (which took a beating in our first year). Unfortunately, 9 months into our plan, the property we managed was turned over to a new management company and we lost our jobs, along with our house, which came with the job. After almost a month of searching, we finally found an apartment that would (conditionally) approve us. But...
... it costs more than $3,600 to move in! (that's a month's retirement benefits, for Rusty). Andrea has struggled to find a few students in the Tacoma area (where we live for 4 more days) but not as many as she lost when we moved an hour south of Seattle. Her remaining students are fiercely loyal and supportive, with two of them making substantial advance payments. The market for her talent is much stronger in Seattle and the near north suburbs, as evidenced by the 19 students she had within the first 6 months of our arrival to the Pacific Northwest! Our new apartment (with the help of our friends!) is in Edmonds, Washington and has space for her students. Also, it is only 30 minutes (in bad traffic) to Seattle, where she can rent studio space for lessons.
With the $600 (NON-refundable deposit/application) fees we've paid and the help we received from her students, we still need $3,080 to get into the apartment. In addition, there are considerable moving expenses and we lost almost $500 of goods in the recent kitchen fire. In addition, we need several hundred dollars to dry clean Andrea's clothing (and then wait for reimbursement). These are the nice cloths she wears for an office job.
We both will be seeking work as soon as possible. Rusty is already discussing work with his former ATLAS colleagues and pursuing other leads in science/technology through his professional network.
Here's the bottom line:
If we don't raise the money by Thursday morning, we will lose the deposit and will be homeless. Please help us keep a roof over our heads and donate whatever you can afford.
* Our RV, in which we lived for the first year we were in Washington, is now too old to be accepted by RV parks, for extended stays (more than a week).
