Ken's Fight Against Stage 4 Cancer

Donation protected

As many of you already know, our beloved Ken Moon was diagnosed with stage IV Pancreatic Cancer in May 2013. In July 2013, Ken went in for a very risky and complicated Whipple procedure to remove the tumor on his pancreas. This was to be a 6-8 hour surgery, but after only 2 hours, the surgery was aborted because it was discovered that the cancer had already spread to his liver. The prognosis the doctors gave was 4 months to 1 year for Ken to live. Ha! Ken has been fighting for almost 2 years since then! Cancer SUCKS, but God is bigger than Cancer! Since then, our family has vowed to never give in and to never give up hope to find a cure. Ken Moon is our HERO! Even while enduring chemo 3 days per week every other week for the past 2 years, his faith and never-give-up attitude have not wavered. His will to live every day to its fullest is contagious and gives the rest of us hope.

Incredibly, for the past 6 months, Ken’s tumor marker tests have gone down and recent scans show that there are no “visible” tumors on his liver anymore and no new cancer anywhere else in his body – only the original mass on his pancreas. This is remarkable! Even so, our Oncologist and the Surgeon tell us that surgery to remove the mass is not an option. Because we cannot wrap our brains around that, believing that there is something other than chemotherapy for the rest of his life, we decided to seek a second opinion outside of the Kaiser Permanente system.

We have been in contact with doctors at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore where they have reviewed Ken’s CT scans and medical records, and they feel strongly that Ken is a candidate for either a Whipple procedure to remove the mass or an Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) procedure also known as NanoKnife. Although quite scary, we are very excited about this opportunity.

This is where we need your help…..

Since Ken is a Kaiser patient, they will not refer him for medical treatment to a non-Kaiser facility, neither will they pay for anything. All of the expenses will be out-of-pocket for us. As you can imagine, this is going to be very costly (expected to exceed $150,000), but we are willing to exhaust our life savings and any other measures if one of these surgeries can be done for Ken. We are flying to Baltimore for a very specific CT scan on July 27th and consultations with the multidisciplinary team of Pancreatic Cancer doctors on July 28th. If it is determined that Ken is indeed a candidate for surgery, we will be in Baltimore for up to 6 weeks. We are looking for any support that you can give us – any amount is appreciated, and no amount is too small. We are so looking forward to lives again that are not determined by chemo schedules, and we believe that time is coming soon.

We thank you with our whole hearts for the love, prayers and support you have given us these past 2 years. We could not have gotten through this without Him and without all of you!

We love you!
