DARIN MARTINEZ (MEDICAL FUND)

DARIN MARTINEZ,  33 years young, husband of Emily, daddy of handsome boys Miles and Max, high school English teacher at North Kansas City High School, cancer survivor.

Darin's roller coaster ride with cancer started in May/June 2012 when he noticed a spot on his tongue that would not go away. An ENT specialist took one look and said it needed to be removed.  After the surgery, the spot he thought was nothing turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma. Smoking and chewing tobacco are the usual causes of this type of cancer. Darin has never smoked or chewed.  According to his oncologist, he has a case of bad luck.

In Sept. 2013, Darin had a recurrence of the cancer on his tongue.  He had a second surgery and it was decided he would need radiation.  Sept. he had surgery, Oct. he had his wisdom teeth removed in preparation for the 30 treatments of radiation he received to his mouth and neck.  In January 2014, after his radiation was complete, he spent a week in the hospital due to complications of radiation (not being able to eat or drink). At this point a feeding tube was put in to help him with getting healthy again. Once again he was cancer free.

In November 2014, Darin had a routine PET scan that showed a small spot/nodule on his right lung.  A biopsy in December showed his cancer had metastasized to his right lung.  In January 2015, he had surgery to remove the nodule from his lung.  At this point his oncologist in Kansas City was not sure what the next step should be in keeping the cancer from coming back and spreading further. He  referred Darin to a head and neck cancer specialist at MD Anderson in Houston, TX. In  March, Darin and Emily took a trip to MD Anderson where it was decided chemotherapy would be the most aggressive treatment.  From April 2015 to June 2015 Darin received 12 treatments of chemo.  His final chemo treatment was June 18th.  He will have a PET scan and receive the results this month.

Even through all of the doctors appointments, surgeries, diagnoses, radiation, chemotherapy, Darin continues to put his family first. He is a dedicated and loving dad and husband.  He is a role model for his sons on what it means to never give up and work hard.  He is loving and kind hearted.

We all have been touched by some devastating circumstances in our lives........So lets count are blessings and prove to CANCER, that we won't let it financially break this YOUNG family!  Darin, Emily. Miles and Max thank you for your Prayers and Support!!!!!!!
