Dan Kirby has spent his entire life serving and protecting others. Dan joined the Army at the young age of 17 as an Infantryman.  While on active duty, Dan was stationed in Germany and Korea. After leaving active duty in 1989, he was hired by the Harvey Police Department where he worked diligently until 1994. His heart was still that of a Soldier, so he continued to serve in the Army Reserves. In 1990, Dan stepped away from his civilian life and answered the call to serve in the Persian Gulf for Operation Desert Storm.

Dan was hired by the Lynwood Police Department in 1994.  While at the Lynwood Police Department, Dan became an essential and loved member of the force. His positive attitude, enthusiasm, demeanor, and work ethic made him a pleasure to work with and be around.

Again in 2004, Dan answered the call to serve in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom as a combat engineer.  During this combat tour, Dan led a platoon of Combat Engineers. After returning from Iraq, Dan returned to the job he loves at the Lynwood Police Department. He is currently assigned to investigations. He retired from the Army after a total of 23 years of service between active duty, the Reserves, and the National Guard.

In 2011, Dan thought he was suffering from kidney stones and sought treatment at an urgent aid clinic.  Doctors informed Dan and his wife, Rachel, the horrible news that Dan was not suffering from kidney stones. They had found a tumor that completely engulfed his left kidney. The official diagnosis was renal carcinoma, commonly known as kidney cancer. Doctors removed the tumor four days later and gave him a clean bill of health.

One year later, Dan had severe back pain and was unable to walk. Dan returned to the doctor and underwent more testing. Results showed bad news once again, as the cancer had spread from his kidneys into his spine. In October of 2013, doctors had to remove a vertebrae and replace it with a prosthesis. Dan continued the fight with cancer for 1 1/2 years with chemotherapy. He was then informed that he was in remission, but this unfortunately lasted for about 6 months.

In October of 2016, Dan once again began suffering from severe back pain and was unable to walk.  He and his wife went to UIC where doctors believed that the prosthesis in his back had failed and was causing pressure on his spine. The doctors made a tragic discovery while operating on his spine to relieve the pressure. Three tumors were found, confirming that the cancer had returned. This news devastated Dan and Rachel. Dan is currently on a heavy dose of chemotherapy and has been given a 50/50 chance survival rate. Dan is not only battling cancer, but he also suffers from PTSD and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). His spirits have been affected by his sudden decline in health, causing him to suffer from a state of depression.

Dan answered the call for service by his country multiple times. His fellow officers of the Lynwood Police Department, his friends, and his family ask that you answer the call to aid this selfless man. We are aiming to raise enough money to provide Dan with a PTSD/companion working dog. Baden K9 in Ontario, Canada will be training and supplying the dog for Dan.

Once Dan learned of the good news about the PTSD/companion working dog, he was smiling from ear to ear. Dan's spirits have been lifted with the news about receiving a dog, as it seemed out of reach when he initially inquired from the VA clinic. The VA clinic had informed him he would be put on a waiting list and could potentially take years. Fortunately for Dan, Baden K9 is able to expedite the process and provide Dan with a dog much sooner.

The cost of the dog being provided is $12,500. Baden K9 is donating $2,000 into the initial purchase of the dog, bringing the total cost down to $10,500. We are hoping to raise $15,000 for our cause. Not only would this provide a dog for Dan, but relief for any future financial burden. This includes delivery of the dog and/or any future expenses of owning the dog.

Baden K9 wishes to deliver the dog in person in order to prevent Dan from having to travel long distances. His severe back pain causes discomfort in a vehicle or plane. We hope to raise the amount needed by January 20th, 2017, which is when Baden K9 plans on delivering the dog in person. Please consider any donation as a direct impact to one of the most humble men we know. If you are unable to contribute financially, we humbly ask that you share this post with family and friends. Most importantly, please keep Dan, his wife Rachel, and their family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you and God bless.
