Dear all,

It is with great sadness we learned that our friend Jan had a
motorcycle accident in Florida, last Friday, 15th of March. Currently
he is in an induced coma, undergoing various surgeries with more to
come.  At the moment he is in Kendall Regional Medical Center in
Florida and his family is in Prague.  With very little information we
have received so far through his family members, we know that his legs
are badly injured. We would like to raise funds to support two members of his family to fly to the U.S. and be by his side (his mother and
brother-in-law, who speaks English). The funds raised would be solely
used to cover their airplane tickets, hotel in Miami and possibly some
pocket money.  We thought  that many of you would like to help. Please
feel free to contribute as much or as little as you can. Every bit
will count and be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much!

P.S. If you know of someone who is close to Jan and would like to
contribute, please feel free to share this e-mail with them, however
for the family's privacy, we would like to ask not to share this
campaign on social media, such as facebook. Thank you.

Dear all, thank you so much for your generous donations. From the name of Jan and from us, please accept our deepest gratitude; it is amazing to be part of this community! Jan's medical transportation has now been arranged. He will be departing from Miami in the evening of April 30 and will arrive to Prague around 1am on May 2, where he will be admitted to the hospital Na Bulovce. He will be accompanied by a doctor and a nurse during the travel. The company in charge of Jan's transport worked very hard to find a very reasonable airfare and eventually it was lower than the anticipated 25000GBP. The cost of the air transportation and the ground transportation in Europe is slightly below 17500 GBP. The transportation to the airport in Miami has been arranged at an additional cost but we have not been billed for it yet.

We consulted with Jan the use of the remaining money that has been fundraised. In addition to covering the stay of Jan's mother for the entire period, brother-in-law (for a week), we will offer contributing towards the travel expenses of Jan's aunt and Jakub Sliacan who came to Miami to help him and his mother during this tough time. (Jan's aunt left Miami three days ago, Jakub is now there and will stay with him until Jan's departure and fly back with Jan's mother.) The remainder of the money will be used by Jan for his recovery, including buying a high quality prosthetic, paying for mental support, adapting his family flat in Prague for his needs, etc.. We will make a further update on this in due course. And by this we stop fundraising, and once again, thank you very much for all the support. You have been incredible friends and colleagues, and we are indebted to you! Thank you!

Best Wishes,

Dan and Liana

Dear all,

Jan was waken up from the induced coma on March 29, two weeks after the accident. His mother and brother-in-law were around thanks to this fundraising's donors and Emory university's support. It was really good that they were around; Jan and his family really appreciated that and are thankful to all of you. His brother-in-law had to return to the Czech Republic for his job and family. Dan flew to Miami (using his own funds) to replace him. Jan's aunt will fly to Miami next week to replace Dan. The funds raised so far are used to keep Jan's family in Miami.

Here is more about Jan's health. Jan's mental abilities are recovered now. The injuries that Jan suffered required a part of his right leg, including the knee, to be removed. He has had his eighth and (possibly) last surgery on Wednesday (10th of April), which was to transplant some skin on his left leg; both the skin and the muscles on this leg still need a lot of healing. However, it is expected that he can be released to be transported to Europe in two-three weeks where he will have free medical care unlike in the US. The medical transportation unfortunately won't be covered by Jan's insurance. It is estimated to be around 25,000 GBP based on the research we did on similar cases. So, we decided to alter the fundraising target to cover Jan's return to the Czech Republic and the prolonged stay of the family members.

Your support is very essential for Jan's successful recovery, and we once more we ask for it. Please feel free to share this fundraising among your friends, colleagues, anyone who would like to help. Thank you very much!

P.S. Please note that Gofundme platform takes about 3-4% fees and additionally, by default they ask you to donate to the platform, you don't have to do it. You can just put zero to the donation box which goes to Gofundme itself, as they are already charging us a lot for each transaction!

Best Regards,
Dan and Liana
