My name is Courtney and I live in south Florida. Many of you know that Katelyn is my younger sister. Last week she spent 3 days in the hospital for observation due to preeclampsia – she was 8 months pregnant. The doctor discharged her Friday to continue bed rest and blood pressure medication.

On Saturday night, her BP spiked to 222/120, causing a seizure. At the hospital, they attempted to deliver the baby, which resulted in placental abruption. Because of this, her baby stopped receiving oxygen. Katelyn began hemorrhaging and required emergency surgery. The baby was delivered stillborn at 6:04am; he was 3 lb and 16 in. long. Katelyn spent an additional 2 hours in surgery to stop internal bleeding.

After surgery, we were told that Katelyn was in organ failure. She was placed in ICU on a ventilator and was diagnosed with DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation) and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count), both of which are rare and serious conditions. The DIC has been resolved but the HELLP is still a serious problem for Katelyn.
Right now, Katelyn is in critical condition on a ventilator with brain, lung, and heart activity but her kidneys, spleen, and liver are not functioning. She receives dialysis 4 hours each day to help start kidney function and she receives plasmapheresis every day to help replace bad blood plasma with good.

Katelyn has a three-year-old daughter named Maya who desperately misses her mommy and doesn't understand what is happening.

Katelyn has had 18 units of blood already and she needs 5 plasmapheresis treatments, which are $100,000 each, in addition to the many other medical bills. She has insurance but it won't cover all the medical costs.
