My name is Mike Hershberger and this year I will be competing in the Des Moines Triathlon for the first time. I was 1 of 8 athletes selected to be given the great opportunity to partner with BMW of Des Moines (this years official automobile sponsor for the Des Moines Triathlon) in "The Ultimate Race to Give" and I have chosen to raise money and awareness for the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes has played a big part in my children's and family's life and we would like to give back and help other families that may go through some of the experiences that we have. Below is a little background of our story.
The average newborn weighs 7 pounds 9 ounces. Our triplet sons Kai, London and Boston were born weighing a total of 5 pounds 11 ounces, after arriving 14 weeks too early. Sadly, we lost Kai and Boston during the first two weeks in the NICU. After 121 days, we were able to take London home.
Sixteen months after our prematurity journey began, our daughter Camden was born four weeks early weighing 5.11; the total birth weight of her brothers.
We are extremely lucky that London has jumped over almost all the hurdles prematurity has placed in his path. Camden has had an extremely easy time. And while this is wonderful and we feel truly blessed...we miss Kai and Boston everyday.
London and Camden are the lights of our lives. Each day they teach us new things, and show us better ways to view the world and live life.
Our 2 Miracles are here in large part to the March of Dimes. Please help us ensure all babies are born healthy. Or as our kids say, "Let's help the ittys-bitsy babies!"

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
