XAVI Needs Surgery

Donation protected
My name is Monica Saromo and I have a huge heart for dogs! If you are reading this, I hope you have a love for them too:) About a year and a half ago, my partner Julio Escorcia Jr. and I adopted Xavi (originally named Frankie) from my friend who was fostering him through Spirit of Hope Rescue. Xavi is a handsome German Shepherd Cross, and is turning 2 years old in November. Back in February 2018, I knew I wanted to adopt Xavi the moment I laid eyes on him. He had a calm but strong presence, and such a handsome face! He reminded me so much of my partner Julio! Once Julio was able to meet Xavi, the connection was instant!

Over the past year and a half, Xavi has grown up to be what you can call a ‘friendly giant’; physically strong and sometimes intimidating in appearance, but so loving, friendly, obedient, and a very loyal companion. For those who are dog owners, I’m sure you can relate when I say that you develop such a special bond with your dogs, that they become almost human to you. With that being said, Julio and I are so proud and blessed to have our boy Xavi in our lives!

Unfortunately, Xavi has been diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia and Cranial Cruciate Disease in both hind legs. He recently tore his Cranial Cruciate Ligament in his left hind leg, and will now need surgery as soon as possible. However, Julio and I cannot afford the estimated cost upfront for the TPLO surgery (the most commonly used method to repair CCL Ruptures in large sized dogs). The cost is ranging from $3,500-$3,800. On a good note, the success rate of TPLO Surgery is extremely high, with an average of 93% of dogs returning to normal or almost normal function.

Examination feedback from a few Veterinarians have said once Xavi get's his left leg surgery done, eventually there is a high chance his right leg will need surgery in the next 6 months to a year due to how much it will compensate for the left leg. On top of that, future issues with his Hip Dysplasia could potentially need surgery as well. We’d be looking at an estimated $12,000-$15,000 total for all surgeries, not including needed rehabilitation treatments and medical expenses.

This is a tough situation to handle both mentally and financially for Julio and I, as we want what's best for our Xavi. The best thing to do is to take this step-by-step. So in the meantime, we are focusing on the urgent care he needs, which is the surgery for his left leg. We’ve gone through a consultation with Manitoba's only Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Bebchuk, who specialized in Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Surgery. If we can raise enough funds, Xavi should be able to get his surgery scheduled within a few weeks. With the proper rehabilitation treatment post-surgery, we hope to see Xavi back to normal where he can enjoy a stable, healthy, and active life.

So to our family, friends, and all dog lovers around, myself, Julio, and especially Xavi would very much appreciate anything you can give to help us. Please also keep Xavi in your prayers, as we believe with faith in God anything is possible. Thank you all in advance for your love and support!
