Education in Black & White: The Institute for Colored Youth and the Continuing Struggle for Education

We need your help to create, print and distribute our 20 page newspaper for this event. 10,000 copies will be distributed through schools, libraries, cultural and community organizations that will celebrate the work of Fanny Jackson Coppin who was principle of the Institute for 37 years from 1865 to 1902.

·         Did you know that the first school of higher education for African Americans was the Institute for Colored Youth here in Philadelphia?

·         Did you know that many of the African American teachers who taught in Freedom Schools throughout the country came from this school?

·         Did you know that many of the Civil Rights activists after the Civil War, like Octavius V. Catto, came from this school?

·         Did you know that many of the battles that Fanny Jackson Coppin fought in the late 19th Century are still being fought today?

I didn’t either! But we should have. That is what this program is about.     

Please take a moment to donate and help us spread the word on Hidden History. Our last edition of our Hidden History newspaper on the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia was used as a classroom supplement in area elementary/high schools.

The Hidden History series continues Moonstone Arts Centers exploration of significant but under known people in American history. Please visit our website www.moonstoneartscenter.org and look under Hidden History for information on our previous programs on people like Ida B. Wells, Voices of Women (Lucretia Mott, Margaret Fuller & Harriet Jacobs), Charlotte Forten and the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia to name a few.

The first two weeks of October 2015 we will present film and discussion programs on Octavous V. Catto, the ICY, The Girard College demonstrations and education today at libraries and schools throughout Philadelphia and follow with a four day symposium of lectures, discussions, a teacher’s workshop and other programing.
