Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 20th as a Category 4 hurricane. It’s almost been a month and 85% of the island is without power. They are still in an emergency situation and in need of help. My family lives in the northwest side of the island in Arecibo and Hatillo (about an hour west of San Juan). Many of you have asked how you can help people in need directly so I started this page to help buy supplies and send money orders so that they can purchase basic necessities. The major goals I have for this funding campaign are the following:
1. My grandmother, who is 88 years old, had a tracheotomy a month before the storm to alleviate pressure on her airway caused by a large tumor growing on her thyroid. Since the storm, she has been unable to get in contact with her doctors to begin treatment and chemotherapy. My aunt, who is my grandmother’s caretaker, has been using a generator to power a vacuum to suction out and clean her airway. They need money for fuel, clean water, and medical supplies in order to maintain my grandma’s health and keep her infection-free.
2. My great-aunt, who is 85 years old and has dementia, does not have a generator. I want to raise money to buy a generator ($600) so that she and her caretakers can have some comfort at home.
3. Lastly, some of you may know about my 35 year-old cousin who tragically died 8 days after the hurricane. If you do not know the story, she was discovered unresponsive and family members were able to revive her with CPR but when police arrived with no EMS they were ill equipped to sustain life saving measures during her transport to the hospital and she died. We do not know the cause of her death but I’d like to raise $3,500 to pay for her funeral expenses.
This disaster is not something anyone could have imagined and the recovery will be a long and arduous process. Lines for supplies are hours long, prices for goods are double what they are on the mainland, and people are trying their best in an impossible situation. I want to be able to do something to alleviate the suffering of my family and our fellow citizens. Thank you for all your overwhelming kind words and concern. Although the logistics of getting items to the island are currently slow, I will do my best to make sure that these donations get to my family as quick as possible. No amount is too small and I appreciate all your help. Thank you!

El 20 de septiembre, el Huracán María azotó a Puerto Rico como categoría 4. Ha pasado casi un mes y el 85% de la Isla está sin electricidad. Ellos todavía se encuentran en una situación de emergencia y en necesidad de ayuda. Mi familia vive en el noroeste de la Isla entre Arecibo y Hatillo (como a una hora de San Juan). Muchos de ustedes han preguntado cómo ayudar directamente a las personas en necesidad, así que abrí esta página para ayudar a comprar suministros y enviar dinero para que ellos puedan cubrir las necesidades básicas. Las metas principales para esta campaña son las siguientes:
1. Mi abuela, quien tiene 88 años, se sometió a una traqueotomía un mes antes de la tormenta para aliviar la presión en su vía respiratoria causada por un tumor en la tiroides. Desde la tormenta, ella no ha podido ver a sus doctores para comenzar su tratamientos y las quimioterapias. Mi tía, quien la cuida, ha estado usando un generador de electricidad para usar la máquina de succión que limpia sus vías respiratorias. Necesitan dinero para combustible, agua embotellada, y medicamentos para mantenerla saludable y evitar una infección.
2. Mi tía-abuela, quien tiene 85 años y padece de demencia, necesita un generador y estamos tratando de recaudar $600 para comprarlo. De esa manera, ella y la persona que la cuida podrian tener mas comodidad.
3. Por último, algunos de ustedes saben de mi prima de 35 años que murió trágicamente 8 días después del huracán. Si no saben la historia, ella fue descubierta inconsciente, algunos familiares pudieron darle los primeros auxilios y reanimarla, pero cuando la policía llegó, no se pudo llamar a una ambulancia para transportarla y desafortunadamente murió en el hospital . Nosotros no sabemos lo que le causó la muerte, pero es necesario recaudar $3,500 para pagar por su funeral.
Este desastre es algo que nadie pudo haber imaginado y la recuperación será larga y difícil. Las filas para conseguir suministros son largas, los precios están el doble de lo normal. La gente está tratando de hacer lo mejor en esta situación tan terrible. Me gustaría poder hacer algo para poder aliviar el sufrimiento de mi familia y de otros puertorriqueños. Gracias a todos por sus palabras y su preocupación. Aunque la logística para enviar cosas a la isla es lenta en este momento, haré lo mejor para asegurarme de que las donaciones lleguen a mi familia lo más pronto posible.
