Help Preserve Marthalyn's Eyes

Tax deductible
Born in 2000 to a hard working and loving mother, Marthalyn was a happy and healthy baby. To support her family, Marthalyn’s mother started a business making and selling palm oil. As the business grew, jealousy in the heart of the mother's friend set on motion an evil act.

One day while Marthalyn’s mother was working, the friend had been making soap, for which she used the dangerous and corrosive chemical sodium hydroxide. Hoping that Marthalyn would come into contact with the chemical, the woman left it where it could be accessed by the then 3-year-old girl.

Without the knowledge of its danger, Marthalyn ingested the chemical. As it burned her, the child rubbed her eyes, causing the sodium hydroxide to enter the eyes as well. Marthalyn lost consciousness for the following three days, during which she received intensive medical care at a catholic hospital. While she was given treatment for the internal wounds, the unavailability of an eye doctor prevented Marthalyn’s eye from being properly assessed.

Given an ointment and eye drops at the time, Marthalyn was released without any diagnosis of damage done to her eyes. As time progressed, what first began as itching in both eyes turned painful, and Marthalyn began to lose her sight.

By 2013, Marthalyn had been taken to a school for the blind, learning how to read Braille and write. As an intelligent girl, she earned honors and high marks throughout her education. However, at the time of her elementary graduation, another challenge arose.

When Marthalyn was asked to find another school, her mother took her to the Ann Sandell school, where she has attended since. Currently in the 10th grade, Marthalyn’s intelligence has earned her a promotion from 9th. However, her mother struggles to afford the cost of her education, often also unable to provide regular transportation and lunch at school.

However, Marthalyn believes in the possibility of being able to see clearly again. While at the school for the blind, medical reports indicated that she was suffering from corneal dystrophies and that her sight could be restored with a corneal transplant. Unfortunately, this procedure can not be done in Liberia, only in the US and other developed countries.

Through the DKF, they hope to be able to raise the necessary funds to get Marthalyn the medical attention that she needs in order to live a happy life. If she is able to regain her sight, Marthalyn hopes to volunteer for the DKF herself, so that she can also help those in need.

With just a small donation of $100.00, you can help a child in need to realize her dreams – transforming her life and the future we all share. We believe even in the darkest times; a brighter future is in the hands of those who give help and hope.
