 Evie needs your help. Evie was one of four in a litter of puppies born to a mama dog rescued from a shelter in Alabama 4 weeks ago. The foster mom called me to help her with a puppy that didnt seem to be growing like the others. Mama dog was very protective so she had to be distracted to get to the failing puppy. When I got her to were I could see her better it was clear that this little puppy was going to need special care if she was going to servive. At first glance it looked like Evie had a cleft palete. She would need to see a vet to see the extent of the problem and if there was anything we could do for her. We had to act fast she was skin and bones and very lethargic. Evie was rushed to the vet and examined right away. The news was good she only had a tiney hole in her palete  and a hare lip. It could be repaired with surgery but we would have to wait untill she is 6-8 weeks old. The surgery will cost from 600 to 1,000 dollars.  The vet explained that Evies ability to suck was like trying to suck through a straw with a hole in it. Not very efficient.The bad news is she could not nurse from her mother she would have to be bottle fed for 4-6 weeks. Evie has done well for the past 4 weeks she has grown from 6.3 oz to 1 lb 10 oz. She was bottle fed every 2 hours for the first 2 weeks and every 4 hours her 3rd and 4th week. My wounderful boss allowed me to use my vacation time to stay home with her. I saved a week to use when she is recovering from her surgery. I had to hire a vet tech to keep her on the days when I had to return to work to make sure she continued to progress. Feeding a puppy with a hare lip is not like feeding a normal animal with a bottle. She is very eager to eat and has to be made to eat slow as not to suck formula into her sinus cavity. Feeding her can take 30-40 minutes she has to be burped like a baby so as not to bring her formual back up. The money you provide for Evie will help pay for her puppy formula, bottles, care giver service and surgery. She is a wounerful little puppy and is starting to develope a sweet and playful personality. It is my hope that when she has recovered from her surgery and is strong enough she will accompany me to work and bring joy to the seniors I work with. Thank you so much for caring and helping me give her the chance to live and grow into a healthy puppy.4 weeks old.
