Help Restore the Children’s Academy

We desperately need your support to ensure that the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History programs can once again assist our youth, who have very limited resources available to them.

In 1991, the home of Georgia’s most famous black female educator, Lucy Craft Laney, was officially opened as a black history. Because of Miss Laney’s dedication to ensuring the highest quality education for children, the basement of the museum was renovated as a Children’s Academy. For years, local youth learned art, history, and preservation. They enjoyed storytelling, learning computer skills, painting, field trips, and other hands on experiences. The program supported state mandated curriculum and provided students ages 6-12 with a continuous learning experience.

Three years ago, the Lucy Craft Laney Children’s Academy Center had to be closed due to severe water damage. Repairs were made to the space to protect the physical integrity of the building; however not enough funds have been available to fully restore the basement so it can once again be used as a Children’s Academy.

We hope we can count on you to help us to restore viable youth programs, and further preserve one of the most important cultural treasures in the heart of the Laney-Walker- Historic District of Augusta, Georgia. Every little bit helps and we thank you in advance for your assistance.
